Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Bear’s Den

Bear's DenBear’s Den is a very promising band from London, UK. The three members Andrew Davie, Kev Jones, and Joey Haynes are very talented and will get pretty big, soon. They have already been featured in our segment You’ve GOT To Hear This with their song Pompeii, and now we had the chance to do an interview with Bear’s Den where they told us about a strange sound engineer and what has them excited for 2013.

AMBY: Hello Bear’s Den! Thanks for having a chat with AMBY, what have you been up to lately?

Bear’s Den: Hi, Amby! We’ve just come back from our first European tour supporting Daughter. We’re big fans of them, both as a band and as people, so it was pretty much just a massive love-fest.

AMBY: How would you describe Bear’s Den’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Bear’s Den: Storytelling songs which aim to inhabit a sonic landscape somewhere between CSN&Y and Youth Lagoon

AMBY: You have just released your new EP Agape. Which tracks are your favourites?

Bear’s Den: Mother, because of the story behind it.

AMBY:  Mother is a wonderful song. What is the story behind it?

Bear’s Den: Thank you! There is a story behind Mother, but we don’t want to limit the scope of available interpretations of our songs by telling our audience how they should listen or exactly what a song means.

AMBY: What do you consider the best lyric you’ve written?

Bear’s Den: “Sever the ties” – Bad Blood. Writing the first line of any song is a challenge, but this one sets the stage quite effectively.

AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

Bear’s Den: At one gig, the sound engineer came up to the stage and whispered, “no matter what you do, always remember to have fun”. He then proceeded to not turn on the sound for the first two songs. Good advice, shit sound guy.

AMBY:  If you could hang out with any of your influences for a day, who would you choose?

Joey: David Crosby

Kev: Tom Waits

Davie: Elvis

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

Joey: Michael Jackson – Bad, Donald Fagen – The Nightfly, Neil Young – Harvest

Kev: RHCP – BloodSugarSexMagic, Guns’n’Roses – Appetite for Destruction, Led Zeppelin – IV

Davie: Blink 182 – Enema of the State, Wilco – Neutral Milk Hotel, Sufjan Stevens – Seven Swans,

AMBY: What is the best song of the year so far?

Joey: All We Are – Utmost Good

Kev: Mikhael Paskalev – Jive Babe

Davie: Daughter – Human

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Bear’s Den: It looks like an exciting few months ahead. We’re playing a few festivals over the summer, including the Summer Stampede with Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, Ben Howard, Ed Sharpe and Haim. Then we’re playing the GOTR stopovers in the UK, Canada and the US. Towards the end of the year, we hope to be doing a headline tour of the UK and Europe.

AMBY:  If you had to describe each member in the band with one word, which word would define them?

Joey –> Kev: LAD

Kev –> Davie: LAD

Davie –> Joey: LAD

AMBY:  And last but never least, what’s something about Bear’s Den that nobody knows?

Bear’s Den: We mime live.

Thank you very much for the interview!
