Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Davey Horne

Davey HorneListening to Davey Horne, you almost get a feeling of being propelled into a different era. Having created quite the buzz as a talented songwriter and a ridiculously soulful singer, this Scotsman was an easy target for our radar. Wanting to acquaint him to our readers, AMBY spoke to Davey about badminton, finishing the new record, and fish allergies.

AMBY: Hello Davey, how have you been and what have you been up to lately?

Davey Horne: All is well thanks! I’ve been in the studio (monomen studios in Fife, Scotland) lately recording my debut album which will hopefully be released by the end of the year. However, at this moment in time, I’m in the States catching some sun. The sun in Scotland can be pretty shy…

AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Davey Horne: That’s always a hard one. Americana with layers of psychedelia and soul.

AMBY: What’s the story behind your lovely song Galvanise My Bones So They Don’t Rust?

Davey Horne: It tells the story of the dreaded fear you get after you’ve over indulged.  (In my case, it’s whisky. Always whisky) It’s following me around. It’s me looking to bring peace to my mind and soul.

AMBY: What do you have planned as far as an album release goes?

Davey Horne: I should be releasing the album by the end of the year. I’ll be taking the band on the road. Hoping to get around the UK, Europe and if all goes to plan; head across the Atlantic to the States and Canada.

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

Davey Horne: That’s a tough question seeing as there are more than 3…I’ll give you the first 3 that come to mind.

Dennis Wilson – Pacific Ocean Blue, Neil Young – Harvest, The Beatles – Abbey Road

AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

Davey Horne: People have recently started chanting ‘I’m Horny’  gigs. This song was a hit in the UK a few years back and now the occasional punter at a show likes to sing it –  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH8WvayAo1M

It makes the band crease themselves with laughter, but as you can imagine, I’m not so keen!

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

Davey Horne: Gram Parsons

The Beach Boys

Tame Impala

The Band

Neil Young

Jonathan Wilson

The Flying Burrito Brothers

Dawes

The Milk Carton Kids

Guy Clark

Gillian Welch

I could go on..

AMBY: What do you do outside of music for fun?

Davey Horne: I’m afraid music is pretty much all I do! I like collecting records. There’s also a pretty fierce badminton related rivalry between my bandmates and I…

AMBY: What song could you live without ever hearing again?

Davey Horne: Most of the stuff that makes the charts in the UK.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Davey Horne: Getting the album done and dusted. It will be nice to see the finished product. Putting the needle to the vinyl for the first time will be a really great moment.

AMBY: If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

Davey Horne: The year we live in! I would take us all back to the 60’s or 70s. Anytime between 67 and 72 would be cool.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Davey Horne that nobody knows?

Davey Horne: I’m allergic to fish. I can’t even swim in the Sea! It’s a terrible affliction.
