Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ MS MR

MS MRNew York City based duo MS MR are delivering some of the best electronic vibes we’ve come by. Recently announcing a headlining North American tour, it’s going to be a busy fall for the band. AMBY caught up with MS MR to talk about their debut album Secondhand Rapture, favourite lyrics, friends heckling them, and festivals!

AMBY: Hello MS MR! Thanks for having a chat with AMBY, what have you been up to lately?

MS MR: Thanks for having us! We JUST got into London this morning and are looking forward to traveling around Europe and Australia and the states this summer for festivals!

AMBY: You have just released your debut album Secondhand Rapture. What were some of the highlights while recording it?

MS MR: Since this is both of our first real musical project and we were writing and recording around our day jobs, the highlight was just being able to do it really. It became this really special time and space away from everyone else and a chance for us to experiment musically as much as possible.

AMBY: What’s the story behind your wonderful song Fantasy?

MS MR: At the root of the story is a relationship that didn’t quite unfold as Lizzy had hoped but the song evolved into a grander nod towards the times we live in and how we often use and manipulate media to reflect an ideal rather than what is real.

AMBY: There are some great lyrics on the album. Which are your favourites?

MS MR: “Dig up her bones but leave the soul alone” – it was the catalyst for what turned into our song Bones. We both loved it so much we put it at the beginning of every verse and chorus.

AMBY: If you had to describe each member in the band with one word, which word would define them?

MS MR: Max (as chosen by Lizzy): Thirsty (both literally and figuratively), Lizzy (as chosen by Max): Driven

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

MS MR: Paul Simon – Graceland, Destinys Child – Writings on the Wall, Arcade Fire – Funeral

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

MS MR: Wet, Lorde, Haerts, Portugal the Man, the new Vampire Weekend

AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

MS MR: Our friend Austin from college came to a gig in SF and heckled us from start to finish – he was just trying to be supportive but we were giggling so much we could barely make it through the set.

AMBY: You recently played the Late Show with David Letterman. What was the experience like for you?

MS MR: Surreal. The performing part of it happened so quickly we barely had time to digest it, but watching it that night was much scarier! It’s bizarre to see yourself in this context and set you’ve grown up with…

AMBY: What has you excited for the rest of 2013?

MS MR: FESTIVALS. In particular, Glastonbury, Splendour in the Grass and Lollapalooza!

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about MS MR that nobody knows?

MS MR: We can’t go 24 hours without bringing Beyonce up at least once.

Thank you MS MR, for giving us your answers! Also, attention all Torontonians! MS MR will be playing The Phoenix this September the 17th. So get your tickets here!
