Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ SEASFIRE

SEASFIREBristol’s SEASFIRE have just released their new single Oh Lucifer, a clever song “about temptation” which is easy to get drawn to. We were delighted to chat with this electronic quartet’s vocalist Josh Thorn about funny gig moments, highlights of their career, and the most inappropriate thing the band’s ever said. So go ahead and dive right into our interview!

AMBY: Hello SEASFIRE! Thanks for having a chat with AMBY, what have you been up to lately?

SEASFIRE: Hi AMBY, we have been playing some great shows lately and last night we played Start the Bus, in our home of Bristol. It quickly turned into a pretty large party with our fans and friends. Other than that we have been getting ready for the release of our new single ‘Oh Lucifer’.

AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

SEASFIRE: When we first started writing music this question was often hard to answer, so we tended to say it was electronic at its core, but draws on contemporary influences – we used to get compared to The Weeknd a lot, for instance. But now that has changed and we get compared to everything from MuteMath to Depeche Mode. Our sound has started to grow so I would say it hints at being anthemic, but we still like to hold something back. We don’t want it to be easy listening. Come to a show though, that’s the best way to figure us out.

AMBY: What do you have planned as far as your next release?

SEASFIRE: ‘Oh Lucifer’ is the new single and is released July 1st. We had the track mixed by Dan Grech who also mixed our last single ‘We Will Wake’. We are really happy with how the new single sounds and we also shot a great video with James Booth who has filmed videos for Little Comets and The 1975. In terms of plans for the new single, we hope it get’s a good reception from radio and from our current fans. Hopefully it will bring some new fans too. Huw Stephens at Radio 1 has been a supporter and gave the track an exclusive first play on his show, which was awesome.

AMBY: What’s the story behind your stellar song Oh..Lucifer?

SEASFIRE: It’s a song about temptation. It’s for those times when you become fixated on obtaining something that you shouldn’t have/want. In the case of Lucifer as a person, it’s based on someone I met at the end of last year who I spent a lot of time with in a short space of time, but that’s all I’m saying.

AMBY: What is the most inappropriate thing you have ever said?

SEASFIRE: It’s probably somewhere in the lyrics of ‘Undone’ a track from our ‘We Will Wake’ EP, you’ll have to listen to find out.

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

SEASFIRE: Jeff Buckley – Grace, Radiohead – In Rainbows, Foals – Total Life Forever

AMBY: What have been some of the highlights of your career so far?

SEASFIRE: Recording sessions at Abbey Road and Maida Vale studios, no doubt. Also supporting The Neighbourhood was insane, as was doing the Lana Del Rey remix. In terms of shows the best have been SWN festival in Cardiff, Sheffield Leadmill with King Charles and of course Reading Festival.

AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

SEASFIRE: Probably getting a girl up on stage in Nottingham who wanted me to sing Heartbeat to her. It was a bit surreal, she’d just got engaged I think and her boyfriend was in the audience.

AMBY: What is your song of the year so far?

SEASFIRE: J Viewz ‘Salty Air’. I only discovered it recently through someone on twitter he sent us a link to it. It’s a couple of years old but whenever the sun is out now, I put it on. But from this year it’s probably Banks ‘Warm Water’.

AMBY: What has you excited for the rest of 2013?

SEASFIRE: I’m off to Glastonbury, hopefully Latitude too. For us as a band we are looking forward to writing new songs and playing more shows, there are plans for an EP release in September, which is exciting.

AMBY: If you had to describe each member in the band with one word, which word would define them?

SEASFIRE: That’s tough, I’m going to have to be careful here. Joe I’d say is inventive. Dave is animalistic. James is determined. I’m not even going to try describing myself in a word, that’s dangerous.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about SEASFIRE that nobody knows?

SEASFIRE: One of us has 4 nipples.

Thank you SEASFIRE, for giving us your answers!
