Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Wild Combination

Wild CombinationSometimes I come across a band and can’t help but think, “damn that’s good”. When it comes to Chelmsford’s Wild Combination, I’ve said this more than just once. Their distinct atmospheric, layered, dream-pop gives AMBY great expectations for what Wild Combination will do next, and according to their last answer, their “next EP sounds great”. To find out even more about Wild Combination, AMBY spoke to lead vocalist Christian Wright about making noise together, ambiguous lyrics, and musical beating hearts!

AMBY: Hello Wild Combination! What’s the band been up to lately?

Wild Combination: We’ve been locked away writing lots of new material and sorting out a cover tune for our festival slots.

AMBY: What can we expect from your debut EP Pulses?

Wild Combination: Five songs that we whittled down from more than 20 that we decided should live together. Each has a synth pulse, a musical beating heart.

AMBY: What’s the songwriting like between the three of you?

Wild Combination: Everyone is involved by the end. What may start in one brain mutates into a room of us making noise together.

AMBY: The Great Expectations video is adorable. What inspired the video?

Wild Combination: The original idea once shot didn’t work. We looked back at what we’d captured and realised the stuff of Ben (the little boy in the video) looked great. So we filmed more and took him to the beach and the woods and bought him ice cream and filmed more. It’s just trying to capture youthful innocence. The song is about the expectations piled on us, so we tried to capture innocence before being aware, without it feeling staged.

AMBY: Whole Lotta Truth instantly makes us want to dance! What’s the great tune about?

Wild Combination: I like a lot of lyrics that are open ended and not too personal. These are probably the most ambiguous I’ve ever written. It’s about escaping somewhere.

AMBY: What’s the story behind the name Wild Combination?

Wild Combination: We named ourselves after an Arthur Russell song.

AMBY: If you could choose to have your music featured in any movie or show, which would you choose?

Wild Combination: A Sofia Coppola film or a BBC nature programme (Sigur Ros can’t keep sound tracking Attenborough, although they do it so well!)

AMBY: How would you describe a Wild Combination concert?

Wild Combination: Energetic with noise.

AMBY: If you could tour with any band, who would you choose and where would you play?

Wild Combination: It would be great to support M83 and Arcade Fire. I believe Radiohead played some outdoor hot climate ampi-theatres in Europe… that’d be nice to do a European summer tour. Or just Glastonbury, as there’s bound to be loads of other great bands playing.

AMBY: What’s your favourite release of the year so far?

Wild Combination: Jon Hopkins – Immunity

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Wild Combination that nobody knows yet?

Wild Combination: Our next EP sounds great.

Thank you Wild Combination, for giving us your answers!
