Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ EFFI

EFFIGraz, Austria’s indie-pop artist EFFI released his second album Closer back in March. EFFI describes his music as “a unique mixture of indie, blues, electronic music, swing, and a bit of reggae”, so there’s something for every listener to love. To see what’s been happening since its release, AMBY caught up with EFFI to talk about climbing through windows, the roaring 60s, and Closer!

AMBY: Hello EFFI, what have you been up to?

EFFI: I’ve been touring a lot since the release of my new album “Closer”. We released some videos. Trying to be creative :)

AMBY: How would you describe EFFI’s sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

EFFI: I’d say it is a unique mixture of indie, blues, electronic music, swing, and a bit of reggae.

AMBY: What are your favourite tracks off your second album Closer, and why?

EFFI: I’d say it is the track Closer, as it is very down-to earth and emotional. I also like Bloom a lot.

AMBY: Muzik is a great song, and we love the video! How did you come up with the concept behind the video?

EFFI: A friend of mine was in New York and saw this great performer Matthew Silver. He asked me if he could use the song for the video, he shot of his performance. That’s how the magic happened. Hope Matthew is going big, as this guy is really talented!

AMBY: What is your guilty pleasure song?

AMBY: I’d say it’s definitely “Sinner Man”, of my last album. Men are sinners, and as I am a man, I had to write a song about it.

AMBY: You’ve been on tour quite a bit lately, what’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?

EFFI: We played a show on a German festival, we played the club stage and there were too much people outside the venue, so not everybody could get in. So after the set we climbed through the window of the venue and played some songs for the people that could not get in – that was fun!

AMBY: If you could create a law that everyone would have to follow, what would it be?

EFFI: Respect yourself – maybe not a law, but as a call for everyone.

AMBY: Which three albums changed your life?

EFFI: I can’t say about albums, but artists that really influences me are Louis Prima, Feist, and Badly Drawn Boy.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

EFFI: Finishing my album, as I am a perfectionist, it was hard to let go. I was really happy, when I held the final album in my hands.

AMBY: Where would you go in a time machine?

EFFI: To the roaring 60s. I guess.

AMBY: What is the best song of the year so far?

EFFI: I heard some demo songs of a local artist named Ricardo Ritalini, he has nothing out yet. But it’s going to be the album of a generation.

AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about EFFI that nobody knows?

EFFI: Trust me, it’s better some things nobody knows.
