Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Crushed Beaks

Crushed Beaks

Noise-pop duo Alex Morris and Matthew Poile are Crushed Beaks. With infectious energy matching the likes of The Vaccines, and creative middle eights followed by hooking choruses, Crushed Beaks are playing space punk continuum like never before. To see what the band was up to, AMBY had a chat with Crushed Beaks about dream gigs, electronic dance music, and their upcoming EP Tropes!

AMBY: Hello Crushed Beaks! How is everyone doing?

Crushed Beaks: Great thanks. We just released a new song yesterday which is always quite cathartic, in a way. Like releasing a captured animal back into the wild after it has been nursed back to health.

AMBY: How would you describe your sound in three words?

Crushed Beaks: Space Punk Continuum.

AMBY: Grim has a lot of energy! Where’s this energy come from for the band?

Crushed Beaks: I think it stems mainly from the two of us being super tight and playing as a unit rather than separate parts. The more we play the songs live the more they gradually speed up. We want to do something that’s interesting for people to watch. It’s always kind of disappointing when you go and see a band and they just look totally bored on stage or they’re staring at a laptop screen.

AMBY: Where did the name Crushed Beaks come from?

Crushed Beaks: It’s an ingredient for a ritual that I read about in some weird cabalistic pdf online.

AMBY: What does the band have planned for 2013?

Crushed Beaks: We’re playing a bunch of festivals this summer and starting to work on an album. I’m writing loads of new songs at the moment and recording demos at home. We’re not going to rush anything though. Our EP Tropes is out in September on A/S/L.

AMBY: Who would your dream gig be with?

Crushed Beaks: Motorhead obviously.

AMBY: Which Crushed Beaks’ lyric is your favourite?

Crushed Beaks: I don’t think too much about the lyrics to be honest. A lot of the time for brand new songs I’ll be singing only one or two lines and repeating them and basically making it up for the first few times we play it live. It’s only when we record a demo with Alex’s drums that I’ll actually sit down and think about it and write a set of words.

AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?

Crushed Beaks: There’s too much! I don’t know where to start. To be honest when I’m recording demos (which is most of the time) I’m mostly listening back to all the stuff I’ve just made on repeat. Alex listens a lot of really fucking heavy electronic dance music which I guess not a lot of people would expect, but I think it influences his drumming style quite a lot. We want to pound people into hypnosis but in that raw way that only a real drum kit can.

AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?

Crushed Beaks: Our EP is out in September and so we’re really excited for people to hear that. I actually think the song Tropes is the least representative song of the general sound of the record, all the other songs have keyboard parts or other textural loops and things going on. I can’t wait for people to hear the tracks in the context of the whole EP.

Thank you Crushed Beaks, for giving us your answers!
