Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Summer Cannibals

Summer CannibalsToday Oregon’s Summer Cannibals release their debut album No Makeup. This record explodes with rocking guitars, laid-back yet sexy vocals, and putty basslines. To celebrate the band’s release, AMBY wants to share our awesome interview with everyone. Have a read as we spoke to Summer Cannibals about No Makeup, taking photos of their dog, and if they were a fictional character!

AMBY: Hello Summer Cannibals, please introduce yourselves to AMBY!

Summer Cannibals: This is Jessica, I play guitar and sing in the band. Marc also plays guitar, Lynnae is on bass and Valerie plays drums.

AMBY: What’s the band been up to lately?

Summer Cannibals: We’re just getting ready for our record release and west coast tour in August. We’re getting really close! Also, the last couple practices we started working on some of the new songs I’ve got for the next record. Hopefully we’ll be able to take some of those on our baby-tour with us!

AMBY: Your debut album No Makeup will be released August 6th. Which songs are your favourite off of it?

Summer Cannibals: Personally, I’m really happy with the way Take Me Out and No Makeup turned out. I think live Take Me Out is our favorite to play; I also really love playing Wives.

No MakeupAMBY: The dog on the cover of No Makeup is badass. How did you decide on that being the final cover?

Summer Cannibals: That’s my dog, Lemon. I probably took about a 100 pictures of her and they’re all blurry because she wouldn’t stop moving. That picture was the only good one and it’s perfect. She’s making the raddest face.

AMBY: What’s the story behind the band’s name?

Summer Cannibals: Summer Cannibals is the title for a Patti Smith song. I’m a huge fan of hers and it just sounds cool…I think that it suits the music really well.

AMBY: Wear Me Out is a great song. Who inspires your rock ‘n’ roll sound?

Summer Cannibals: Lots of bands! But the big ones are definitely Pixies, The Fall and Patti Smith.

AMBY: Does hailing from Portland, Oregon have an influence on your sound? And if so, how?

Summer Cannibals: I don’t think that it influences our sound that much…it’s a really nice place to live though. I’m sure that it affects our sound more than I want to give it credit, I feel like that’s mostly subconscious though.

AMBY: If you could hang out with any of your influences for a day, who would you hang with and what would you do?

Summer Cannibals: I feel like I’d be either too scared or too intimidated to spend any legitimate length of time with most of my influences…I mean, what the hell would I say to Mark E. Smith?

AMBY: If you could be any character in fiction, whom would it be?

Summer Cannibals: This is a hard one! I think I’d choose Daniel Desario from Freaks and Geeks because he’s fucking cool. Initially I was thinking Sookie from True Blood but I’m not big into sundresses.

AMBY: What’s the best song of 2013?

Summer Cannibals: It’s a tie between No Face by Savages and Toe Cutter-Thumb Buster by Thee Oh Sees

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Summer Cannibals that nobody knows yet?

Summer Cannibals: Man, I just spent the last 20 minutes trying to think of something clever to put here and I got NOTHIN.

Thank you Summer Cannibals, for giving us your answers!
