Calling all Fluorescent Hearts’ fans! The band are to play Glasgow’s G2 on September the 12th, and you can win two tickets to the show along with a meet and greet. I’ve had the opportunity of speaking with the band members and they are extremely humble, down-to-earth guys putting their passions and awareness into the music they love. Recently releasing their spectacular new single Guide You Home, AMBY had the pleasure of catching up with indie-rockers Fluorescent Hearts to speak about favourite lyrics, overpaying for a veggie burger and coffee, Xbox, and fan-interaction.
AMBY: Hello Fluorescent Hearts, cheers for speaking with AMBY. What’s the band been up to lately?
Fluorescent Hearts: We have just released a new single ‘Guide You Home’ and we head out on the 7th September on a UK tour. So currently, a lot of time spent in the studio!
AMBY: How would you describe each band member in one word?
Fluorescent Hearts: Chris – hilariouslyattractive, Gary – Herbivore , Andy – thecuteone, Martyn – smoothwithwordsandlikeslongwalksinthepark
AMBY: You released your debut album Anthem last year. What are your thoughts on the record now that there’s been time to reflect on it?
Fluorescent Hearts: We all love ‘Anthem’ very much and have our favourite tracks on the album. ‘Guide You Home’ displays growth that has been made by FH as a band, given the time when the songs on Anthem were written. It sounds more mature yet still retains the distinct sound of Fluorescent Hearts.
AMBY: On August 14th you asked your Twitter fans, “what’s your favourite lyric from our new single?”. Now it’s time to spin this question around! What’s your favourite lyric from Guide You Home?
Fluorescent Hearts: Our favourite lyric would have to be “You gotta move to the groove, erase the pain that’s hurting you’. It could be labelled cheesy as a line – however, when you know the song is about mental illness and have any experience with dealing with it personally, then you quickly understand that the line is about dealing with the waves of discomfort, that can overwhelm someone dealing with depression.
AMBY: Aside from Guide You Home‘s lyrics (and the music), the video is also great. How did you create the concept for it?
Fluorescent Hearts: The concept is all about raising awareness of mental health issues and it’s something we’ve all had experience in dealing with, with loved ones and fans alike. It’s all about overcoming the illness itself, which we understand is not easy task. Help is out there and that first step is to simply ask for it.
AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you while on tour?
Fluorescent Hearts: This was not funny at the time, however it’s hilarious now! Out in Asia, we were at McDonalds in Hong Kong and went in to grab a bite to eat. Our drummer Gary bought a veggie burger elsewhere earlier & ordered a coffee here. Once we had finished our food & walked back to our hotel, Gary realised he had been paying for food and coffee with Singapore dollars. That equates to paying 5 TIMES the cost – £50 for a veggie burger and a coffee!
AMBY: If you could invite any 3 people to record an album with, who would you pick?
Fluorescent Hearts: We’d love to work with the likes of John Mayer, Ryan Tedder, DJ Rankin and any like-minded musicians who enjoy making inspirational music.
AMBY: What does the band do outside of music for fun?
Fluorescent Hearts: Something we all enjoy doing is playing Black Ops 2 on Xbox. We also enjoy going to local gigs in Glasgow. We know how tough it is trying to build a fan base so we try to support as many other bands in our local scene.
AMBY: There’s a competition going on where fans can win two tickets and a meet and greet at your Glasgow G2 show. It seems that fan-interaction is very important for the band. So is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
Fluorescent Hearts: Fan-Interaction is something we’re very passionate about. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that continues to support us and welcome to new listeners/fans.
AMBY: What’s the best song of the year?
Fluorescent Hearts: That’s a tough one as we all have different music tastes. Being biased, we would obviously say ‘Guide You Home’! Favourites of the band this year is: ‘The Mother We Share’ by ‘CHVRCHES’ and ‘Chocolate’ by ‘The 1975’.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Fluorescent Hearts that nobody knows yet?
Fluorescent Hearts: Probably that a lot of work happens behind the scenes with our team that is ‘Fluorescent Hearts’. We have a lot of people that care about us and help deliver our music to everyone.
Thank you Fluorescent Hearts, for giving us your answers!
