Scottish based indie rockers Model Aeroplanes have been causing quite a stir recently. Their fresh take on modern indie rock leads to their sound being one of the most unique around, and it’s only a matter of time before they make a real impact on the music industry. The band have only been active for a year but have already filled the BBC Introducing tent at T In The Park, played alongside bands such as Editors, Bwani Junction and The Merrylees and been featured in the Sunday Mail.
We had the chance to catch up with Model Aeroplanes in a recent interview, where we talk about semi-unconscious bassists, roaring guitars, and Boris Johnson.
AMBY: Hello Model Aeroplanes, what’s the band been up to lately?
Model Aeroplanes: We’ve been playing quite a lot of shows around Scotland recently and writing new material for future releases. We have also been publicising the release of our debut single Crazy which is out on September the 16th.
AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Model Aeroplanes: Exotic, fruity and sexy are just a few words which spring to mind. We like to write music that combines upbeat rhythmic qualities with orchestrated musical parts, catchy vocals and roaring guitars.
AMBY: Your debut single Crazy is great and that chorus is extraordinary! What inspired the song?…
Model Aeroplanes: Summer nights and happy times. The song is simply about having a good time, forgetting your troubles and saying how you feel.
AMBY: What’s next as far as recording goes?
Model Aeroplanes: We’re currently in the early stages of producing our second single. Keep a look out.
AMBY: Where did the name Model Aeroplanes come from?
Model Aeroplanes: It’s a long story which involves Power Rangers, Boris Johnston and one particularly keen illegal immigrant. We’ll tell you when you’re all older and wiser.
AMBY: You recently opened for Editors a week back. What was that experience like?
Model Aeroplanes: It was an incredible show. By far the biggest crowd we have ever played to and the crowd seemed to really enjoy our set. We really hope to continue to play great shows with great bands like that.
AMBY: And speaking of playing with other artists, who would be in your ultimate concert line-up?
Model Aeroplanes: That’s a hard question but we’d love to play with band’s like The 1975 or Foals.
AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?
Model Aeroplanes: Rory got too excited with his guitar swinging front man moves and we ended up with a semi-conscious bassist, who then snapped a string right before our kick drum burst. Thinking about it, that was not a funny gig.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Model Aeroplanes: Kieran – sleepy. Rory – daft. Grant – annoying. Ben – lanky.
AMBY: What would the fortune teller predict about Model Aeroplanes down the road?
Model Aeroplanes: A He-Man inspired gig at Slane Castle with The Mighty Boosh as a support act.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Model Aeroplanes that nobody knows yet?
Model Aeroplanes: Windows 7 was our idea.
Thank you Model Aeroplanes, for giving us your answers!
