With the recent influx of two pieces it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out. Vancouver band The Pack A.D, however, are having no such trouble. Consisting of Becky Black (guitar, vocals) and Maya Miller (drums, punch lines) they have extensively toured Canada and the US playing their own take on garage rock with “a bit of blues from back when time began”.
Having just released the single Battering Ram we were able to catch up with Maya from The Pack A.D. for a chat, where she talks about mutual inspiration, Frank Ocean, and the Pack A.D. live experience.
AMBY: Hello The Pack A.D., thanks for speaking with AMBY again. What’s the band been up to?
MM: All sorts of good things – recording, taking pictures, playing music, getting ready to release our next album.
AMBY: Your latest single Battering Ram is a great track with a wild video! What inspired the song?
MM: Thanks so much. Well in the beginning, my drum beat inspired Becky’s melody and then we made the song. Then Becky wrote the lyrics and then we recorded it. So, maybe we both inspired it :)
AMBY: And how did you come up with the concept for the video?
MM: That was director, Lloyd Lee Choi’s concept. We were just there to beat each other up.
AMBY: Your 5th LP Do Not Engage is coming out next year. What can fans expect to hear from the album?
MM: More of the same, except maybe even stranger…
AMBY: When we last spoke back in September of last year, you said that the band “tend to speed up when we’re having a good time” while playing live. So tell me more about the Pack A.D. live experience!
MM: Well, we both play really hard, sometimes fast, sometimes slightly less fast…we enjoy quick looks at each other which in other band’s might be seen as communication but really we’re not saying anything at all with those looks. If Becky is tuning her guitar then I talk about random things. If she takes too long tuning her guitar then everyone has to listen to me talk even more about random things.
AMBY: What’s the craziest thing to happen to you while on tour?
MM: I can’t even begin to go into that.
AMBY: Your Facebook page lists some of your interests as “Soup. Eggs. Pink icing. Coffee. Tennis.” But what is your favourite pastime?
MM: My personal current favorite pastimes are playing Tennis, playing Magic and reading LA Noir novels.
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to record an album with, who would you pick?
MM: Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Stewart Copeland. And then I would just leave because they would do so much better without us.
AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?
MM: I would describe Becky as: Magnetical. Becky is not here right now so I can only assume she would describe me as BasicallyAmazing.
AMBY: What’s the best song of the year?
MM: For me: Thinkin About You by Frank Ocean.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s the best part of being in The Pack A.D.?
MM: Making music and hanging with my best friend.
Thank you The Pack A.D., for giving us your answers again!
