Washington trio Sunwolf (Rob Tifford, Tom Bunnell, and Danny Bentley) release their forthcoming EP, Angel Eyes, on October 8th. With a single as upbeat and contagious as Push It, we can’t wait to hear what else these garage-rockers have to offer. In a recent interview, A Music Blog, Yea? caught up with Sunwolf to talk about how a long day of surfing inspired their name, artwork, and a secret band member.
AMBY: Hey Sunwolf, welcome to AMBY. Please introduce yourselves!
Sunwolf: Hi we are Sunwolf, nice to meet you.
AMBY: If you had to describe each member in the band with one word, which word would define them?
Sunwolf: Kalani – the dreamy one/Tom – the voice of reason/Danny – the good looking one
AMBY: Where did the name Sunwolf come from?
Sunwolf: It came to me after a long day of surfing. It was September and there was a good hurricane swell. It was late at night, the fire was burning bright and the moon was full and Jupiter was at its closest point to Earth so it was super bright. It was at that moment that I knew I had to call the band Sunwolf.
AMBY: Your new single Push It is great. Who inspires you as songwriters and musicians?
Sunwolf: Without sounding too clichéd, we really find inspiration everywhere. The more you write your songs the more interesting other bands sound. You know?
AMBY: What’s your favourite song off of your forthcoming EP Angel Eyes?
Sunwolf: That’s like trying to pick your favorite child. Each song is a direct reflection of who we are and where we’ve been as a band. We all have our favorites but don’t want to say at this time. It’s classified. We’re a DC band.
Sunwolf: The cover is a message to all those people who steal music and all those multi-million dollar companies who have built their empires on the back of piracy and short changing the creators.
AMBY: What’s the Washington music-scene like? And are there any bands we should keep an eye on from there?
Sunwolf: DC scene is pretty much DJ and electronic based at the moment. We are just a little microcosm but in our World, and I am sure we will leave people out and apologize, but bands we like are Deathfix, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, Priests, Chain and the Gang, Shark Week , anything Windian Records puts out, and Dismemberment Plan
AMBY: You are allowed to say one sentence which will reach the whole world. What would you say?
Sunwolf: Invest in Creating a sustainable society, stop spending money on Destruction and War.
AMBY: Who would be in your ultimate concert line-up?
Sunwolf: Ultimate concert line up? Yipes! What kind of bill are we talking? A show at a club or a festival with 300 bands? Here’s a dream festival- Curtis Mayfield(1971), The Parliaments(1969 – this is right before they became Funkadelic), Serge Gainsbourg (during his Melody Nelson phase) Donovan(during his Sunshine Superman phase) Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead (1977), and Fugazi.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
Sunwolf: Ours! No, there’s been so many good records put out this year. We’ll stay local and say; Deathfix, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, Priests, Chain and the Gang, Shark Week, anything Windian Records puts out and Dismemberment Plan.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Sunwolf that nobody knows?
Sunwolf: We have secret member and we call him TDT – sometimes he shows up and ruins the party.
Thank you Sunwolf, for giving us your answers!
