Sex-pop makers Night Panther had a chat with A Music Blog, Yea? about rehearsals, Jean Claude Van Damme, and being into glam. Posting a recent cover of The Beatles’ I Wanna Be Your Man, and soon to play CMJ, it’s the perfect time to familiarize yourself with this trio from Doylestown, PA! Dig in:
AMBY: Hello Night Panther, cheers for speaking with us. What’s the band been up to?
Night Panther: Thanks for having us. Currently we’ve been recording constantly, by the end of the month we should be finished our second record. On top of that we have playing regionally and preparing for CMJ in October.
AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Night Panther: We like to pull from a lot of different eras of dance music for the soundscape, primarily from the 70s and 80s. But putting a more pop spin on it allows us to explore more intense themes.
AMBY: Which songs are your favourite off of your album Night Panther?
Night Panther: That is constantly changing, right now I’d say ‘Delta’ or ‘Snudge’.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your LP’s artwork?
Night Panther: When we started the band we were very into glam and flash. It was the first picture we ever took as a band. The album we just released is about 2 years old and that photo perfectly describes where we were when we made it.
AMBY: The Lioness video is quirky and insanely bizarre. What inspired it?
Night Panther: Our mutual love for Jean Claude Van Damme and action films from the 80s, I have a very large VHS collection.
AMBY: What’s the songwriting process like between the three of you?
Night Panther: Everyone offers something different and it all comes together to make a cohesive product. We work together very well and we use a majority rules policy on things undecided. We also recently started incorporating our live band into some recordings because they’re awesome and we love them.
AMBY: What are your rehearsals usually like? Does the band have a set time to practice or are rehearsals more off-the-cuff?
Night Panther: Our band is like our family so we never need an excuse to all get together. But we take our jobs very seriously so we practice long and hard, then we usually stay up to 5am drinking.
AMBY: We like the name Night Panther, but had you considered any other names for the band?
Night Panther: They are too bad to mention.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year so far?
Night Panther: The new ‘Holy Ghost!’ record ‘Dynamics’
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something Night Panther that nobody knows yet?
Night Panther: The character ‘Ferrari Cadillac’ from our ‘Fever’ music video was born on Halloween when Farzad decided to be Yanni. He blacked out and woke up with his all white outfit completely ruined so when we went out the next night he had to wear all black. We then decided to make him a drug kingpin and wrote the movie around that.
Thank you Night Panther, for giving us your answers!
