Glitter-pop creators Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party were a blast to speak with. We caught up with TLGLTP’s Donné to talk about their debut album, sexiest gig moments, ultimate dance songs, and high energy dance parties! Have a read below:
AMBY: Hello Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party, what a name! How’s the band doing today?
TLGLTP: We are doing well – very excited as we just released the album and are getting really lovely feedback from our fans and supporters. We also are writing again- almost finished 3 demos for the next album.
AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
TLGLTP: We usually say we sound like the album title (Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party) but for those who want more of an answer the album is a complex mix of a bunch of things. At times it is poppy, light and danceable and then in other moments, its slower, heavier and more peaceful. There are also moments of full on electro madness. I think it has something for everyone honestly.
AMBY: Your debut album came out back in September. What’s the response been like so far?
TLGLTP: Very positive – we have had some generous and hilarious press from the UK – this being one of my favourite quotes. “Danger Love’, the single that brought these nutters to my attention, is actually one of the more sombre tracks on this album as Top Less veer more towards a more Bat For Lashes style that is like the cool night air on your skin as you tumble from a sweaty club in a messy, sloppy grapple with the latest focus of your lust.” (listen with monger)
AMBY: You did a contest where fans had to tell you about the sexiest thing that’s happened to them at a Top Less show. Now we’re turning the tables, and asking you.
TLGLTP: I have had a couple naked dudes come out of the crowd to dance beside me on stage before but that wasn’t my favourite. Haha. This is hard to pinpoint – things often take a sexy turn at our shows. We once had a naked blow up doll named Brad that my guitarist kevy (who is definitely the little vixen of the group) jumped onto and crowd surfed with. That was a mix of hilarity and oddly sexy.
AMBY: What inspired the new video for Danger Love?
TLGLTP: Our drummer Benny grew up in Hannover, Germany at a Waldorf school and as a lad learned Eurythmy. For those unfamiliar with this type of dance – this is the wiki definition. Eurythmy is an expressive movement art originated by Rudolf Steiner with Marie von Sivers in the early 20th century. Anyway – Benny always danced in this odd mix of that and hip hop movements and I guess while soaring thru the Canadian Rockies in our sketchy tour van we came up with the idea that we would model our video after that type of dancing. Cut to the end of the story – we found ourselves in a forest outside of Vancouver in late october, barefoot and clad in cultish, odd flowing robes listening to Benny direct us as we froze our asses off. I think it turned out well though.
AMBY: Which TLGLTP lyric is your favourite?
TLGLTP: Woo this is hard, I always have loved this line from Robin “my German friend – he said let’s have a three some, we can go halfers on the consequence.” I think its cheeky and fun and realistic. My near second would be a line from Diamonds which is about being in love with someone who is brilliant and stunning but who drains the better parts of you. “Diamonds are cold to the touch, they take heat from your hand.”
AMBY: You’ve previously described your shows as “high energy dance parties”. What’s your ultimate dance song?
TLGLTP: Ultimate dance song from the album? The end of Colleen Harpe usually gets people all razzed up. From other artists I currently go mad when I hear Rudimental’s – “Feel the Love” or M.I.A’s – “Bring the Noise”. A few of us DJ on the side – so the boys would probably say something by LCD Soundsystem, Calvin Harris, Diplo or a flashback track from Pat Benatar.
AMBY: What’s the craziest thing to happen to you while playing a gig?
TLGLTP: I would say any of the crowd surfing moments especially when Mike and I crowd surfed together. Another hilarious moment was when Kevvy crowd surfed with a 6 foot blow up penis called Captain Pecker. Captain Pecker ended up being thrown back at the stage and side swiped me as I was singing.
AMBY: Which three of your influences would you love to hang out with for a day?
TLGLTP: As a band I think we would all get an absolute kick out of hanging with Prince, James Murphey, David Byrne. Personally I would want to hang out with Feist, or Tegan and Sara as both had major influence over my song writing.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
TLGLTP: Best release of the year? I don’t know if I can answer that fairly but these are 5 that impressed me thoroughly.
– James Blake “Over Grown”
– Cold War Kids ” Dear Miss Lonely Hearts”
– RY-X “Berlin EP”
– Sin Fang “Flowers”
– Shad “Fam Jam (Fe Sum Immigrins)”
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party that nobody knows yet?
TLGLTP: We sleep in matching pyjamas and bunkbeds similar to those in Zoolander.
Thank you Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party, for giving us your answers!
