Between releasing her debut record From the Start this summer and working on self-publishing a children’s book, Los Angeles’ retro-pop chanteuse Lots of Love has had a busy year. To learn more about all the madness, A Music Blog, Yea? recently spoke with Lots of Love herself, Jessica Fleischer! Have a look below at our conversation:

self-publishing a children’s book, her rad vintage look, and her bucket list.

AMBY: Hello Lots of Love, please introduce yourself to AMBY.

Lots of Love: Hi, AMBY! I’m Lots of Love.

AMBY: What’s the story behind the name Lots of Love?

Lots of Love: Many years ago, when I was in the process of putting my first band together and only had a few songs,  I was rehearsing in my apartment with my friend Chiara (who was Lots of Love’s first bass player). We were taking a break from playing, and talking about boys, when she received a text message from a guy she was talking to. The text read “LOL”. She said “I always thought LOL meant Lots of Love”.

I said,  “Maybe that’s what we should call our band!”

And it stuck. I’ve never had another band name.

AMBY: Your debut album From the Start was released on August 27th. What is the significance behind the album’s title?

Lots of Love: ‘From the Start’ is the name of one of my favorite songs on the album. Since it’s also my first record, I figured it just made sense to make it the album’s title. I didn’t want to overthink the name too much.

AMBY: You’re self-publishing a children’s book Little Luna and The Universe. How did the character of Little Luna come to be?

Lots of Love: Well, I was babysitting when inspiration for the book hit. This three-year old girl named Sophie asked me, “Why does the moon follow the sun?”. I knew immediately that I wanted to write a children’s book to teach kids about the bigger picture of The Universe. When I started writing the first couple drafts, there wasn’t even a character or a story. In the beginning stages it was just an educational poem. That approach didn’t feel right me, so I started writing it as a story about a little girl.

From that point on, the words just poured out of me. I wanted her name to have something to do with outer space, so Luna seemed sweet and appropriate. Then I sat down and drew a couple different character sketches. I had to figure out what Little Luna looked like. I think I did about four different character looks before I created Little Luna as we know her today.

AMBY: Which Lots of Love lyric is your favourite?

Lots of Love: “Don’t misunderstand me, I’m whole without knowing. Where it is in this here world that I’m going. Well it’s not a problem to long for a mate, but to learn to rely on the gear-shifts of fate”

That’s my favorite lyric on the album (from the song “I Think it’s Called Love”). I also really like the lyrics in “Ghosts are Coming”.

AMBY: We couldn’t help but notice your rad vintage look. Who inspires it? And do you feel it has an influence on your sound?

Lots of Love: I think that the inspiration for my sound and my style come from the same place. It’s just a part of who I am.  Music and art are forms of self expression, I feel the same way about fashion. I’ve always loved fashion and felt a connection to retro music and design.

AMBY: Your excellent song When I See You was produced by your longtime friend Robert Schwartzman. What was it like working with him on the track?

Lots of Love: It was cool. Originally, I wanted to record that track with drums and make it a little more rockin’. The demo was stripped down, similar to the album recording.

Robert felt strongly about keeping the song stripped down.

Before we added the background vocals and melodica it was only vocals and guitar. I insisted that the song needed something else in the chorus sections. So Robert laid down those vocals that you now hear in the background of the choruses. I loved what he did. I think it sounds beautiful now.

AMBY: What are the top five things to do on your bucket list?

Lots of Love: That’s a tough one. There are SO many things I want to do here. Here’s a first draft:

1.  Travel around the world.

2.  Watch the entire LOST series, in-full at least two more times.

3.  Fall in love

4.  Have children

5.  Be a positive, healing force on the planet, while inspiring other to do the same.

AMBY: Who would be in your ultimate concert line-up?

Lots of Love: The Beatles, The Shangri-las and Billie Holliday. I’m assuming this doesn’t have to be realistic.

AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?

Lots of Love: I really like the Telekinesis album ‘Dormarion’. I could listen to the song ‘Power Lines’ a million times.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Lots of Love that nobody knows yet?

Lots of Love: When and where our next show will be. I don’t even know that yet! Thanks for reading and please stay in touch with me via the Lots of Love social media sites and stay in the Lots of Love. xoxo
