Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Whales In Cubicles

Whales In CubiclesToday, Whales In Cubicles release a free download of their new song Golden Medal. Winning critical acclaim from The Sunday Times, The Independent, Clash, Radio 1, 6Music, and XFM, the London trio are on our list of bands to watch out for. Set to release their debut album in early 2014, A Music Blog, Yea? caught up with the band to talk about an upcoming video, massive falafel, and how they are very much in love.

AMBY: Hello Whales in Cubicles, what’s the band been up to lately?

Whales in Cubicles: Eating a massive falafel on Clapton pond. But yeah, generally eating falafels. And writing album 2.

AMBY: The new single Wax & Feathers sounds great. What’s the story behind the song?

Whales In CubiclesWhales in Cubicles: Some were born to sew, or soar. Our friend Jack got a tattoo inspired by the song that says some were born to sew. So he adapted the lyrics to fit his tattooing agenda. Gotta love Jack. Interesting fact.

AMBY: Your album will be released in January 2014. What will it be titled?

Whales in Cubicles: We want to keep the name a surprise. Or we haven’t yet decided, we’ll leave it up to you to decide which of the two. But we’ll probably use our favorite song on the album.

AMBY: Who inspires you as songwriters and musicians?

Whales in Cubicles: In no particular order Kurt Vonnegut, Jeff Bridges, Billy Elliot, Mark Twain, just to name a few.

AMBY: Come November, the band have some UK dates lined up. What can fans expect from your live shows?

Whales in Cubicles: Rrrrrrraaaa. A lot of that. We are having the best time we ever had playing live at the moment. And new songs that were written after the album was recorded.

AMBY: You’ve been Facebooking and Tweeting about an upcoming video. What do you have planned for the video?

Whales in Cubicles: I really can’t spill the beans on that one. Let’s just say we are not going to star in it. Yet again. It will be seriously tongue in cheek as the song is a cross between sincerity and causticity.

AMBY: Where did the name Whales in Cubicles come from? And what other names had you considered for the band?

Whales in Cubicles: I considered no other name (liar), I am a whale in a cubicle and so is everyone I know, and probably everyone else too. Everyone is trying to squeeze themselves out of a box, often of their own making, aren’t they?

AMBY: What would a movie based on the band be called?

Whales in Cubicles: SO LOW.

AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?

Whales in Cubicles: Misty Miller, check her out, she is amazing.

AMBY: What would the fortune teller predict about Whales in Cubicles down the road?

Whales in Cubicles: 47 love childs. One for each country in Europe.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Whales in Cubicles that nobody knows yet?

Whales in Cubicles: We’re splitting up. No we’re not. We are very much in love.
