Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Attu

AttuNorth London four piece Attu recently launched their new single Don’t Sleep. The ethereal, harmonious, and warm track is a taster of an EP which is to follow in early 2014. To find out more, AMBY had a chat with Attu to talk about dream recording sessions, their bucket list, and the inspirations behind their work.

AMBY: Hello ATTU, how are you and what’s the band been up to?

ATTU: Hi Alicia, we’re all good thank you. We’ve been nice and busy doing all the things small bands do really, write, record, practice and go to work. Somewhere in there we like to try and have a social life too.

AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

ATTU: This is a hard question as a lot of our songs tend to go in different directions. I guess with the stuff that’s already out there, the easiest way to describe it would be ambient electronic with slightly mathy guitars, soft vocals and harmonies.

AMBY: Don’t Sleep is such an addictive and unique song. What’s the story behind the track?

ATTU: Well a while back, Tim wrote an instrumental album and Don’t Sleep was one of the songs on it (however the instrumental back then was very very different). Me and Mich eventually got our hands on it and it became what it is today. The original was a lot calmer and we wanted this version to be quite fast paced, when we added vocals we wanted them to be more energetic as none of the vocals in any of our songs at the time were like that, the whole of the first EP was so laid back that we wanted vocals that really stood out in comparison.

AMBY: The song is a taster of an EP coming in early 2014. What will the upcoming EP be titled?

ATTU: As it currently stands, the second EP will be self titled, however this could change.

AMBY: What was the inspiration behind releasing IV as ABC, and D?

ATTU: Well when I first started the EP (at this point Attu was just me) I finished B then C (at this time these weren’t the names) and I thought that B flowed really nicely into C so I decided to make an EP that flowed as much as possible and to be listened to in a very specific order. This also helped A and D as I wrote both as a very specific start and finish. I thought that by naming them A,B,C and D they’d be set in people’s heads as a collective and people would think of it as strange to listen to it in any other order. To this day my dad just says that I was being lazy though.

AMBY: Where did the name ATTU come from?

ATTU: Attu originally started as a side project to a previous band that some of us were in called Delta/Alaska. Attu is a tiny island off the coast of Alaska that is still part of it, so this was meant to represent something that was separate to one thing, but also still a part of it.

AMBY: If you could invite any three people to record an album with, who would you pick?

ATTU: 1. Chino Moreno as pretty much everything he touches turns to gold and we’d like that. His voice is insane, he can do the craziest things with it and it seems to work just as well with metal as it does with laid back electronic music.

2. Jon Karel as he’d be able to do anything you could think of on the drums and way way more. There’s this video of him on youtube doing things with drums none of us would begin to think of, just a brilliant super unique drummer.

3. Dr Dre. Does that really need to be explained?

AMBY: What are the top five things to do on your bucket list?

ATTU: We’d like to:

1. Make a living off music

2. Tour Canada and America.

3. Make a record we’re really proud of

4. Play the Royal Albert Hall

5. Make a record which means something to people

AMBY: What’s your favourite release of the year?

ATTU: Michs favourite release of the year is ‘With Siinai: Heartbreaking Bravery’ by Moonface. Tims is ‘EP2’ BY FKA twigs. Stefs is ‘Arc’ by Everything Everything. Chikes isn’t a real release but it was the ‘leaked’ Jai Paul album.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about ATTU that nobody knows yet?

ATTU: Pretty sure no one knows yet that me (Stef) and Mich are siblings.

Thank you Attu, for giving us your answers!
