With a newly reformed original line up of Joel Stoker (vocals, guitar), Lucas Crowther (guitar, vocals), Robert Pyne (drums) and Grant Marsh (bass), The Rifles are back and are kicking some serious ass. With new tour dates, fab singles, great music videos, and their new LP None the Wiser due for release on January 20th, it was the perfect time to catch up with the band’s Joel Stoker. The Rifles have been in our music libraries since the release of No Love Lost back in 2006, and it was a delight to chat with them about what to expect from the new album, favourite lyrics, and their fondest touring moments…
AMBY: Hello The Rifles, thanks for speaking with AMBY – we’re huge fans! What have you been up to lately?
The Rifles: We’ve just finished recording or 4th album and at the moment we are in the middle of our tour.
AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential The Rifles?
The Rifles: No Love Lost, The Great Escape, and Freedom Run (and soon to be “None the Wiser“) oh sorry I thought you said which 3 albums.
AMBY: Your fourth record None the Wiser is set for release in January of next year. What’s the significance behind the title?
The Rifles: We couldn’t make up our minds on a title and I said to the management after they kept asking “with regards to the album title I’m none the wiser” and Luke said “I like that”.
AMBY: Looking forward to the upcoming release of the LP; how would you describe the feel of the album?
The Rifles: It’s definitely got some No Love Lost esque type of songs but the sound gets a little bit more grown up as the album moves along.
AMBY: Heebie Jeebies is sounding amazing. What’s the story behind the song?
The Rifles: Needing a hair of the dog.
AMBY: The Rifles have some brilliant lyrics, my personal favourites being from Tangled Up in Love. Which The Rifles lyric is your favourite?
The Rifles: The simplest and most universal one would have to be “all I need is a little peace and quiet”.
AMBY: You’ve toured all over the UK, Europe, and North America. What would you say is one of your fondest touring moments?
The Rifles: We’ve been very lucky to go to lots of different places and they’re all great but me and Luke closing the show singing All You Need Is Love in front of 175, 000 people in Kazan Russia takes some beating.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
The Rifles: Amazing, brilliant, outstanding, genius, and Deano.
AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?
The Rifles: It’s a shame we never got our album out sooner as that would have been an easy answer (ha ha) but probably Arctic Monkeys.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about The Rifles that nobody knows yet?
The Rifles: How we got the album title. X
Thank you The Rifles, for giving us your answers!
