The Maydays caught my eye when they opened for The View in Chester. Recently I spoke to the band to find out what’s next on the agenda, who influences their music, and what they are up to in their spare time.
AMBY: Who are The Maydays and what’s the story behind your name?
The Maydays: We are Keeno, Nick, JJ, Neil and Knoxy. We started about 4 years ago when brothers when Keeno and Nick started writing acoustic songs together. Slowly the rest of us joined and filled them out a little and we kept writing from there. The name is basically a nod to a Libertines track.
AMBY: How would you describe the band’s sound?
The Maydays: Our sound is a pretty simple mixed of fast paced, upbeat rhythms and 60’s style rock pop riffs. Most of our songs are pretty easy to dance to, which is something we always try and go for.
AMBY: Who would you say your biggest influences area as a band?
The Maydays: The music which has influenced us most would be Beatles, Arctic Monkeys, Libertines and The View. A lot of our stuff takes inspiration from other places as well like film and TV, or just stupid things said by our mates.
AMBY: You recently supported The View on the opening night of Chester’s The Live Rooms how was it?
The Maydays: It was an honour to be playing on the opening night of Chester’s best new music venue, and unbelievable to be supporting The View. As I said, they’re one of our biggest influences and being able to perform the same night as them was a dream come true for all of us.
AMBY: What’s next on the agenda?
The Maydays: We’ve got a few new tracks which we’re yet to record, so that’s a big priority for us right now. We’ll be trying to get those down and get an EP out in the New Year.
AMBY: Who have you been listening to lately?
The Maydays: We’re always listening to different stuff to each other, but a quick list would be Death to the Strange, Shoot the Rabbit, Baby Brave and the Lovebites, Luke Gallagher, Kidsmoke, Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Strypes.
AMBY: What’s been your favourite album of 2013?
The Maydays: Has to be AM this year.
AMBY: What do you get up to outside of music for fun?
The Maydays: As a group it’s really just going out and taking the piss out each other. A few lyrics have made it in which are having little digs.
AMBY: And lastly what’s something about The Maydays that nobody knows yet?
The Maydays: Knoxy’s car goes 100 miles an hour.
Thank you The Maydays, for giving us your answers!
