Gimme Your Answers 2: An Interview w/ RIOTS

RIOTSBirmingham’s RIOTS had a busy 2013; the band not only released their debut EP The White, they also dropped a debut music video and have announced a new EP coming out in the new year. RIOTS also have a free single, Start Again, which is available to listen to and download now at their website. To find out more about the forthcoming EP, AMBY spoke with friend and front man Tom Lynam about videos, hailing from Birmingham, his bucket list, and more.

AMBY: Hello again RIOTS, cheers for speaking with us. What have you been up to lately?

RIOTS: Hey AMBY! We’re good, we have a free track available, it’s our first full band release. We’re also recording a new EP for 2014.

AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

RIOTS: I’d call it acoustic rock, its got the singer songwriter vibes with the power of a band.

AMBY: The White EP was released back in July. What was the inspiration behind calling it The White EP?

RIOTS: I was going to record a second acoustic ep and call it The Black EP, make it a 2 part series. But things have moved on a lot quicker then expected so we’re moving onto the band ep next, which is sounding great.

AMBY: How did you create the concept for the My Love video?

RIOTS: I wanted it to be a follow on of the song; you’re watching what happens next while listening to the start of the story within the song.

AMBY: Which song from the EP would you like to see a video made to next?

RIOTS: I’m going to do a solo video for Desperate and Young, I think the next official video will be for a song from the full band ep, which I’m very excited about.

AMBY: Does hailing from Birmingham have an influence on your sound? And if so, how?

RIOTS: I think people from Birmingham are very honest, straight to the point, they don’t mix what they’re saying. I think that comes across in the lyrics and the power of the band.

AMBY: What are the top five things to do on your bucket list?

RIOTS: I’d like to play all over the world, see wonderful exotic places and meet wonderful people. Write an album that will stand the test of time. Swim with Dolphins. Start a government party and start a revolution. A trip to Jurassic Park too, that would be amazing.

AMBY: In our first interview, you told us that your “life is surrounded by music.” What’s one of the best moments you’ve had involving music?

RIOTS: Touring around Europe this year, I’ve been to Germany, Norway and Sweden for the first time and seen some truly amazing sights and met some incredible people. I have music to thank for that.

AMBY: What’s the best release of the year?

RIOTS: Biffy Clyro, Opposites. In an age when the music industry is saying “the album is dead”, bringing out a double album that is incredible from start to finish is an amazing achievement. We’ve also seen great albums from Karnivool, Artic Monkey and Lorde.

AMBY: And lastly, what’s the best part of being RIOTS?

RIOTS: I get to make music with musicians I admire whilst releasing my creative side into the songs and music.

Thank you RIOTS, for giving us your answers!
