Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Louis Spoils

Louis Spoils

Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Louis Spoils (the moniker of Jake Rush) released his debut music video for single Sleep At Night on January 4th, a song which features Wally De Backer (Gotye) and Kane Mazlin (Hungry Kids of Hungary) on the recording. Filmed at his grandmother’s lavish house in Brisbane by his uncle, it’s the perfect accompaniment to the artist’s debut single. To learn more about the video, working with Wally and Kane, and what’s next, dive into our exclusive interview with Louis Spoils:

AMBY: Hello Louis Spoils, cheers for speaking with AMBY! What have you been up to lately?

Louis Spoils: Hello AMBY. Lately I have been listening to a lot of Dirty Projectors, building a new rehearsal room in a friends warehouse and I have just started proper music lessons for the first time in my life, I can already play jingle bells on the piano, my mother is really proud.

AMBY: How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Louis Spoils: My music is quite diverse, I have been told it’s a bit like Beck, The Eels, Gomez, Radio head, Gorillaz. Not really sure how I personally would describe it, I always advise to have a listen and make up your own mind, otherwise I will sound like a wanker describing my coolness new wow sound!

AMBY: You recently released a debut music video for your single Sleep At Night. What was the highlight of creating the video?

Louis Spoils: Well my uncle (Ben Hackworth) shot the clip in my Grandmother’s crazy old house, unfortunately ! Wasn’t there for the shoot, so the whole clip was a surprise to me at the end. I didn’t even know the full story until I saw the first edit, I left it all in his hands.

AMBY: Not only is the video fetching, the song is lovely. What’s the story behind the single?

Louis Spoils: Why thank you. The song relates to feeling vulnerable and a bit helpless. Some friends of mine and I were beaten up in Brisbane, and quite literally I couldn’t sleep for a few nights and the song popped up.

AMBY: What was it like working with both Wally De Backer (Gotye) and Kane Mazlin (Hungry Kids Of Hungary) on Sleep At Night?

Louis Spoils: Kane laid all his harmonies down in his bedroom in Brisbane, and we chatted over the phone about it. He has some of nicest falsetto you will ever hear. Working with Wally was a bit daunting for me, being such a fan of the guy’s work.  I rocked up to his Music Barn the night before we were recording and I physically and verbally showed him the drum parts. The next day he lay down the original seven tracks in the studio in six hours. He was the world’s most patient rhythm machine. I must say, you feel like a bit of a dick when you tell Gotye, “nahh you’re not getting it right,” hahahaha.

AMBY: What’s next as far as recording goes?

Louis Spoils: I have begun writing an album, and will begin demoing once my new band room is up and running. Lots of crazy ideas ahead for me, and some exciting collaborations to come.

AMBY: Does hailing from Brisbane have an influence on your sound? And if so, how?

Louis Spoils: I think the older generation of musicians in Brisbane probably had the most influence on my music, as I grew up surrounded by them, doing my home work out the back of clubs and bars when my father had gigs, or full bands rehearsing in my lounge room.

AMBY: Which other artists from Brisbane should we keep our eyes on?

Louis Spoils: OOOH (This is my favourite question)

Laneous And The Family Yah, My Own Pet Radio, Georgia Potter, Jeremy Neale, Ball Park Music, Hungry Kids Of Hungary, Erin Ross, The Trouble With Templeton, Tom Glaum, Holy Holy, KAFKA.

AMBY: Which 2014 release are you most looking forward to?

Louis Spoils: Hmmm that’s a tricky one, I heard a sneak peek of the Ball Park Music album, that was pretty amazing. But I have been hearing rumour of a new D’angelo album and a new Lauryn Hill album. All of these would blow my mind I am sure of it !!!!!!!

AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Louis Spoils that nobody knows yet?

Louis Spoils: I am the love Child of Ringo Starr and a North Korean Spy and I wish I was Quincy Jones!

Thank you Louis Spoils, for giving us your answers!
