Today we’re delighted to have a sprinkle of retro-beach vibes swaying onto the site. Dublin, Ireland’s September Girls recently released their debut noise-pop album Cursing The Sea (out on Fortuna POP! now). From the first listen we had of their single Heartbeats, we knew we had to speak with these ladies about their sound, vintage look, bucket list, and Cursing The Sea. Here is what they had to say:
AMBY: Hello September Girls, what’s the band been up to lately?
September Girls: Album, album, album! It’s been a long, busy year of hard work, but the album release is finally here. We’ve been busy prepping for tour, as well as getting a jump on writing new material. Can’t wait to get out and play some shows!
AMBY: How would you describe each member of September Girls in one word?
September Girls: Dopey, Sleepy, Sneezy, Grumpy, and Bashful. Or was that someone else…..
AMBY: Your debut album Cursing The Sea is great. What’s the significance behind the title?
September Girls: Cursing the Sea seemed an apt title for the album as many of the songs deal with distance, insecurity and inner turmoil, alluding to an overall sense of being adrift. In keeping with this, we chose the setting of a beach at night for the artwork, hoping to capture that feeling.
AMBY: Does hailing from Dublin influence your sound?
September Girls: We’re actually two fifths from Dublin, one fifth from Waterford, and two fifths from the USA! Not sure what influence that has on our sound exactly, but the fact that Dublin has brought together five people from such different backgrounds has surely had an effect.
AMBY: Which September Girls lyric is your favourite?
September Girls: I have honestly never thought about that! All of our lyrics come from individual experiences, so it’s cool to get that glimpse into my friends’ heads when we’re working on each other’s songs. I don’t think I could choose a favourite, but to name one I like, I’m a fan of the chorus in ‘Ships’.
AMBY: The members of the band have an awesome vintage look. Who inspires it? And do you feel it has an influence on your sound?
September Girls: We’re inspired by what we like, and what makes us feel good, so when creating our sound it’s about us wanting to make the kind of music that we would like to listen to ourselves. We all like different things, but our tastes overlap in a love of juxtaposing pop melodies and girl group-style harmonies with lots of noise and distortion. Dressing pop in black, I guess you could say.
AMBY: What are the top five things to do on your bucket list?
September Girls: See the Grand Canyon, hug a bear, rub a tiger, go to a tropical island, eat real-deal southern barbeque.
AMBY: Which 2014 release are you most looking forward to?
September Girls: The Horrors apparently have a new release this year, is that right? That would be fun. Also heard a rumour about a new Robyn release. That would also not suck.
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about September Girls that nobody knows yet?
September Girls: We are building a robot. Maybe.
Thank you September Girls, for giving us your answers!
