I first became aware of Elefantasy a couple of weeks or so ago when Linn Branson of Little Indie Blogs started shouting (in capitals) in my Facebook news feed for promoter Andrew Dutton to wake up and tell her about the great new band he was working with. It was 2am in the UK, a ridiculously early time in Linn’s view for Andrew to be wanting to sleep. That band were Essex duo Kieran Panchal and Alex Lydamore – Elefantasy.
And the two 15 year olds have produced a remarkably accomplished debut EP that belies their age. Sure the influence of the likes of Foals and Peace can be heard in their sound but this is no cheap imitation. It may seem ambitious to open an EP with an instrumental in Odeyssea but this dreamy number replete with watery effects sets up the rest of the EP well, as other songs introduce Kieran’s rich lead vocals – perhaps best showcased on Mary Do You Wanna.
With Alex on lead guitar and Kieran on rhythm it would clearly have been something of a challenge to replicate the EP’s sounds live as a duo. So it’s not a surprise to learn that Rowan Cullen has now been added to the band on bass and that they are in the market for a drummer. They are quickly learning to master the social media side essential to getting a band’s sounds out there with Facebook and Twitter profiles now up and running. And with a play by John Kennedy on Xfm scarcely a week after their SoundCloud debut Elefantasy are a band going places fast.
