Garage glam-rockers Semi Precious Weapons are scheduled to release their third studio album Aviation on April 8th. The Los Angeles-based quartet have already dropped their Aviation EP, which includes the first four tracks off the upcoming album. In a recent interview, A Music Blog, Yea? spoke with Semi Precious Weapons’ frontman Justin Tranter to discuss their amazing recording experience, what’s above us, Lady Gaga stage diving, and more!

AMBY: Hello Semi Precious Weapons! Welcome to the world of AMBY. What’s the band been up to lately?

Semi Precious Weapons: We have been living in the mystical land of Los Angeles, making songs, making sounds and making babies. Not really making babies…it just sounded chic.

AMBY: Your forthcoming album Aviation comes out in April of this year. What were some of the highlights you had while creating it?

Semi Precious Weapons: Having our dream producer, Tricky Stewart become our musical mentor was beyond a highlight. But also, just spending an obscene amount of time with each other, writing a hundred songs in our house was an amazing experience. In the past we never had the time  to just write, like do nothing but write. So that’s been amazing.

AMBY: What is the significance behind the title Aviation?

Semi Precious Weapons: Besides that the first single on the album is called Aviation High, so many of the songs are about what’s above us. The sky, the stars, and the feelings that make u high. So the word Aviation just felt right. The glamour and hope of flight.

AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential Semi Precious Weapons?

Semi Precious Weapons: Semi Precious Weapons (the I Can’t Pay My Rent But I’m Fucking Gorgeous song), Aviation High, Healed (which isn’t released yet).

AMBY: What’s one of the craziest things to happen to SPW on stage?

Semi Precious Weapons: Well GaGa stage diving during our show at Lollopalooza, Ke$ha running out during our show in a cat head and red solo cups over her hits, and the countless times I’ve almost died via guitar and/or bass to the head.

AMBY: Semi Precious Weapons formed in 2006. What have been some of the highlights of your career?

Semi Precious Weapons: Making music with Jack Joseph Puig, Tony Visconti, Tricky Stewart, and some other great minds. And obviously getting to perform for beautiful fans all over the world from Mexico City to Japan is priceless.

AMBY: If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Semi Precious Weapons: For executives to stop thinking the music buying audience is dumb.

AMBY: Which bands or artists would you recommend our readers check out?

Semi Precious Weapons: Beyonce. Kelela. Felix Snow. Jason Isbell.

AMBY: What has you most excited for 2014?

Semi Precious Weapons: To finally have all this music we have been working on for so long come out, to get back on the road and the new season of House Of Cards.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Semi Precious Weapons that nobody knows yet?

Semi Precious Weapons: Stevy is batting cage master, Cole is a MMA fighter, I was a junior tennis champ and Dan is an amateur curling hero.
