Now I’m sure we’re all quite aware of bands like Tame Impala and my personal favorite, Foxygen. But a new contender is stepping into the ring to claim the title for new and most relevant band in the psychedelic genre. “Sun Structures” by Temples was released in early February and seems to be one of the most ambitious albums of this year if not the album with the most impact so far. Older and more studious listeners might pick up influences of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and in terms of vocals obviously, John Lennon.
“Shelter Song” gets the blood pumping and helps set the mood of what is to come later in the album. It proves to be one of the catchiest and easiest listens on the record. Though the songs have a few differences in key and the mood, I was still able to appreciate the steady basslines that although, helped accentuate the song, I came across this album feeling like they were buried and under-appreciated in terms of production. The guitar riffs and vocal melodies remain constant and to new listeners help them transition into other parts of this genre that might be considered less accessible. I actually could see this album growing into a favorite and possible contender for my album of the year. Definitely worth a listen if more psych is what you’re looking to get into.
