When I first crossed paths with California’s From Indian Lakes, I knew I had discovered a hidden gem. With layers upon layers of gorgeous vocal harmonies and heartfelt lyrics caressing anthemic alternative guitar riffs, it was pretty hard to not instantly fall in love with the band. Currently on their Able Bodies U.S. Tour, A Music Blog, Yea? caught up with From Indian Lakes before their show in Chicago at The Beat Kitchen (giveaway/tickets). Read our interview below as we discussed their album Able Bodies, hanging with their favourite bands, and facial hair.

AMBY: Hey From Indian Lakes, welcome to AMBY! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.

From Indian Lakes: Hi, my names Joey V.

AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?

From Indian Lakes: Skinny. American. Frugal. Mexican. Coffee.

AMBY: Currently on your Able Bodies tour, what have been some of the highlights so far?

From Indian Lakes: Selling out the first night was great. The crowd was a lot of fun. SXSW was a pretty awesome time. It’s nice to play a bunch of really great shows there, instead of feeling silly and playing to no one.

AMBY: Which cities do you look forward to playing the most on this tour?

From Indian Lakes: NYC is always a lot of fun. I personally love Portland, but Chicago is great too.

AMBY: What’s the craziest thing to happen to From Indian Lakes while on the road?

From Indian Lakes: Not sure. We are pretty boring guys. One time our breaks went out. That was scary. We have had some of our favorite bands come out and hang out with us. That’s pretty crazy.

AMBY: You released your latest album Able Bodies in November of 2012, what’s next as far as recording goes?

From Indian Lakes: We are in the middle of a new album now. Hopefully it gets finished and put out this year.

AMBY: My personal favourite song off the record is I Don’t Know You. What’s the story behind the track?

From Indian Lakes: Thank you very much. When I wrote that, I was feeling pretty lonely I suppose. It sort of deals with a lot of different themes of loneliness and low self esteem.

AMBY: If you had to spin only one record on repeat for the rest of your life, what would it be?

From Indian Lakes: Probably In Rainbows by Radiohead. Or A Different Kind Of Fix by Bombay Bicycle Club.

AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?

From Indian Lakes: We just got on a pretty huge tour and that will be awesome. I really look forward to get some new songs out and into the commercial part of things now that we have some people backing us.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about From Indian Lakes that nobody knows yet?

From Indian Lakes: Oh jeez. That’s really tough. Half of us can’t grow facial hair yet.
