Although Michael Schulte shot to YouTube fame in 2012 by covering hits by Radiohead, Lana Del Rey and Daft Punk; he was quick to put his own song-writing skills to use. Between receiving over 39,000,000 views on his YouTube channel, achieving a Number 1 album, and reaching third place on Germany’s The Voice, there was much to discuss with the 22 year old German singer-songwriter. Dive into our interview below as we spoke about his upcoming album, covering favourite songs, career highlights, and television.
AMBY: Hello Michael, how are you and what have you been up to lately?
Michael Schulte: I’m good, thanks! Well, I’ve been recording my new album ‘The Arising’ in Berlin, with some amazingly talented producers and I am more than happy with the final product! I started writing new songs about 1 1/2 years back and the recordings took us about 4 month, from October till February. We really took our time to figure out how we could get the most out of every song. That was exciting but also, of course, a bit stressful. I’m happy to have a few days off at the moment!
AMBY: How would you classify your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Michael Schulte: I think it’s difficult to classify your own music. I don’t really like to put it into some kind of drawers, but if I’d have to, it would probably be a mixture of Folk, Pop, Alternative and some electronic element. Authentic music, for sure. I write about things that I experienced myself and things that really bother me. I like my music to be emotional, a bit dark and melancholic.
AMBY: You released your UK debut Rock and Scissors last month. What’s the story behind the song?
Michael Schulte: I don’t really like to tell people about my own story behind a song. Everyone can see different stories in a song and get different feelings hearing it, and that’s also what I think makes a song to a good song. I like it, when people use their own imagination.
AMBY: What’s next as far as recordings or releases go?
Michael Schulte: So, the album is finally finished and will be released in September/October, and also we’re going to release an EP in May. Other than that I’m touring in November and also playing Festivals in Summer. Really looking forward to that!
AMBY: Which other artist from Germany should our readers check out?
Michael Schulte: I can recommend a band named ‘Claire’. That is some really good music!
AMBY: Where would your dream concert take place, and who would be in the line-up?
Michael Schulte: I’d love to play at Roskilde Festival in Denmark. I’ve been there a few times and it would be amazing to get on stage at such a big Festival. Ben Howard, London Grammar and James Blake should join!
AMBY: In the past, you’ve done some great covers of Radiohead, Lana Del Rey, and Daft Punk. Can we expect any other covers in the near future?
Michael Schulte: Yeah! Definitely! I really like doing my own versions out of my favorite songs and I’ll keep doing that. Covered Ben Howard and Ed Sheeran lately.
AMBY: Having received over 38,730,000 views on your YouTube channel, achieving a Number One album, and reaching third place on Germany’s The Voice, what would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?
Michael Schulte: I think my highlight so far was to be able to produce my new album with a group of people that are more than amazing. I am so lucky about getting this opportunity and can’t wait till everyone can listen to the songs. That might be another highlight then. Also every concert I play is a highlight. I just loved my audience so far! ..
AMBY: If you could have your music featured in any television show or movie, which would you choose?
Michael Schulte: Difficult question.. I really like to watch series like Breaking Bad, How I Met Your Mother, Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead, but my music wouldn’t fit, I guess.. So I’d just take any big movie in cinema! The upcoming and last ‘The Hobbit’ for example.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Michael Schulte that nobody knows yet?
Michael Schulte: Oh.. I’m a musician, who really is in good contact with my listener and I guess they know everything I want them to know already. So if there is something I don’t want them to know, I will definitely not tell them anything about that.
Thank you Michael Schulte, for giving us your answers!
