Canadian singer-songwriter JF Robitaille released his latest album Rival Hearts this past summer. Since its release, the born storyteller has been creating videos, getting ready for his European tour, and also dropped his new single Saint Catherine. To find out what the future has in store for him, A Music Blog, Yea? spoke with JF Robitaille about gentle biker gangs, trading places with Beyonce, and what’s next on the recording front.
AMBY: Hello JF Robitaille, thanks for speaking with us today. What have you been up to lately?
JF Robitaille: Hello! I’ve been rehearsing for the upcoming European Tour, playing shows and doing interviews and stuff. Also writing, always writing.
AMBY: How would you classify your sound to all your listeners?
JF Robitaille: I write songs and try to present them in the most direct way possible.
AMBY: Your album Rival Hearts was released last year. What is the significance behind the record’s title?
JF Robitaille: It has a couple meanings to me, people seem to think it refers to some kind of conflict with another person, I was thinking more of a conflict within one person. Also could be the name of a very gentle biker gang.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your latest single Saint Catherine?
JF Robitaille: It’s about a person who gives too much of themselves and gets all used up.
AMBY: What’s next as far as recordings or releases go?
JF Robitaille: We still have a way to go with this record but I’ll maybe get something new out next winter.
AMBY: You’ve played some high-profile gigs at CMJ, NXNE, Pop Montreal, and the Halifax Pop Explosion. What’s one of the favourite festival moments you’ve had?
JF Robitaille: The best thing about any festival is just seeing a lot of shows and hanging out with friends from other bands. One time I had a NXNE showcase and forgot my ID so I had to play with two black X’s on my hands like some straight edge acoustic balladeer.
AMBY: If you could trade places with another artist in the industry for a day, who would it be?
JF Robitaille: Beyonce! I would spend 24 hours recording JF Robitaille songs and rush releasing them.
AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?
JF Robitaille: I’m extremely excited about the record coming out in Europe and touring over there.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about JF Robitaille that nobody knows yet?
JF Robitaille: I’m not a folksinger.
Thank you JF Robitaille, for giving us your answers!
