What exactly is “nostalgia”? By definition, it’s “a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one’s life” or “a sentimental or wistful yearning for the happiness felt in a former place”.
When it comes to music, I’m sure music lovers have nostalgic and heartfelt memories on a regular basis. However, for me, it doesn’t get more nostalgic than a first concert, bands who help you through a rough day, music that’s been with you for more than a decade, or music you know will truly hit the spot no matter your state of mind or emotion. The artists I’m talking about are The Used and Taking Back Sunday – two of the most important groups that I have ever heard.
These bands are the epitome of the word nostalgia for me, and when A Music Blog, Yea? was given the opportunity of speaking with both of them, it was a true honour. Next week, The Used and Taking Back Sunday play Toronto’s Kool Haus and it will be an unforgettable celebration of incredible music. That’s why we’re pleased to present to you part one of our interviews: an interview with Taking Back Sunday.
Read the interview below as A Music Blog, Yea? spoke with bass guitarist Shaun Cooper about their new record Happiness Is, kicking ass and taking names, popcorn, and quintessential Taking Back Sunday songs.
AMBY: Hello Taking Back Sunday, welcome to AMBY. We really appreciate you speaking with us today! What have you been up to lately?
Shaun: We have been touring all over the world. Kicking ass and taking names, no big deal. Our record just came out March 18 and we couldn’t be happier about that.
AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential Taking Back Sunday?
Shaun: Cute without the E, Make Damn Sure, Flicker, Fade.
AMBY: Your album Happiness Is was just released. What can fans expect to hear from the new record?
Shaun: Some pretty sweet rock n roll songs.
AMBY: When it comes to the title, what is the significance behind Happiness Is?
Shaun: It represents where we all are in our lives both personally and professionally.
AMBY: While recording the album, what was one of the best moments you had?
Shaun: Listening to Mark slay it on drums was pretty sweet. Hearing Adam and John develop the words and melodies is always fun.
AMBY: Which lyric by Taking Back Sunday is your personal favourite?
Shaun: There are far too many to pick just one.
AMBY: What’s the most inappropriate thing you’ve ever said or done?
Shaun: I’d be a fool to write that out here. I’m a father after all!
AMBY: My first real concert was seeing you and The Used in Toronto in 2004, and we really look forward to have you back this month! What do you most looking forward to regarding the tour?
Shaun: We are just elated to play our new songs for people. We worked so hard for so long on “Happiness Is”. It is wildly rewarding when people are singing our new songs back to us in a live setting.
AMBY: Speaking of concert experiences, what’s one of the craziest things to happen to Taking Back Sunday while on stage?
Shaun: Blink 182 dropped literally tons of popcorn on the band a few years back.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Taking Back Sunday that nobody knows yet?
Shaun: Eddie is an avid RC car collector.
Thank you Taking Back Sunday, for giving us your answers!
