Comprised of Dane Etteridge (vocals and guitar), Simon Goldring (drums), Joseph Heaselgrave (guitar), Tom Beck (keys), and Greg Bishop (bass), Brighton-based quintet Beautiful Boy recently unveiled their debut AA single Home and new pop-rock track Love Me More. Both singles are set for release on May 19th via Raygun Records. A Music Blog, Yea? recently had the pleasure of speaking with the “cinematic” group about John Lennon, music they love, recording their debut, and more. Read the entire interview here:
AMBY: Hello there Beautiful Boy, welcome to AMBY! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
Beautiful Boy: Hi guys, thanks, we are Beautiful Boy, a band from the south coast of England. We try and make music that we love and hope to share that with as many people that will give us the time of day.
AMBY: In one word, how would you describe the overall vibe of Beautiful Boy?
Beautiful Boy: “Cinematic”
AMBY: Where did the name Beautiful Boy come from, and what other names had you considered for the band?
Beautiful Boy: The name Beautiful Boy came from the John Lennon song “Beautiful Boy, (Darling Boy)”. It’s almost like we’ve given ourselves a very high benchmark or music connection in order to push ourselves creatively and as a band. Having the looming figure of John Lennon’s ghost constantly hanging over us. Metaphorically of course ha.
AMBY: What’s the story behind your energetic release Mad to Live?
Beautiful Boy: Mad to Live is a song based around a very simple sentiment of wanting to be ‘Mad to Live’ that was taken from a short paragraph out of Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’. “All my friends are the mad ones, the ones that are mad to live, mad to love…etc”. I am a very big fan of his work and I guess I tried to create a little bit of homage to it.
AMBY: What’s next for you as far as recording or releases go?
Beautiful Boy: We are planning our first official single to be released in early May, which will be an online and limited Vinyl release that we are all really excited about. There are also plans to periodically put new tunes on our sound cloud page, in and around the release, we just really want to share as much music as people are willing to listen to.
AMBY: If you had to spin only one record on repeat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Beautiful Boy: If it’s an album it would have to be “Abbey Road” by the Beatles. If it was a single which is ultimately a much harder choice ha! Living with the same 3-4 minutes for the rest of your life would be intense. It would either have to be… “Dreaming of you” by The Coral or “I Cant Make You Love me/tick of time” by Bon Iver. (quite different tunes but both quality)
AMBY: What are the top five things to do on your bucket list?
Beautiful Boy: It’s all kind of tied in to music and writing and stuff, but I guess it would have to be…
1. See the whooole world.
2. Write a film score for a great movie.
3. When I’m old and grey produce a record for a great band.
4. Write a novel (even if its awful)
AMBY: Who are some bands or artists you’d recommend our readers check out?
Beautiful Boy: Ryan Adams, Arcade Fire, Dry the River, James Blake. Anything by; Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, Elvis Costello, The Smiths. (I’d imagine you’ve heard of most if not all of these, but great non the less… Other music that’s a little more obscure would be; Traams, Royal Blood, Ed Prosek.)
AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?
Beautiful Boy: Sharing our music with as many people as possible, playing as many shows as we can wherever we can, releasing our debut single and hopefully recording our debut record.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Beautiful Boy that nobody knows yet?
Beautiful Boy: Every single member is an Olympic level Death boarder.
Thank you Beautiful Boy, for giving us your answers!
