What exactly is “nostalgia”? By definition, it’s “a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one’s life” or “a sentimental or wistful yearning for the happiness felt in a former place”.
When it comes to music, I’m sure music lovers have nostalgic and heartfelt memories on a regular basis. However, for me, it doesn’t get more nostalgic than a first concert, bands who help you through a rough day, music that’s been with you for more than a decade, or music you know will truly hit the spot no matter your state of mind or emotion. The artists I’m talking about are The Used and Taking Back Sunday – two of the most important groups that I have ever heard.
These bands are the epitome of the word nostalgia for me, and when A Music Blog, Yea? was given the opportunity of speaking with both of them, it was a true honour. This week, The Used and Taking Back Sunday play Toronto’s Kool Haus and it will be an unforgettable celebration of incredible music. That’s why we’re pleased to present to you part two of our interviews: an interview with The Used.
Read the conversation below as A Music Blog, Yea? spoke with The Used’s guitarist Quinn Allman about their loyal fanbase, favourite lyrics, inappropriate moments, and how they’re here to love.
AMBY: Hello The Used, thanks for speaking with AMBY today! We’ve been fans of the band for years and really appreciate your time. What have you been up to lately?
Jeph Howard: Today, I woke up at about 9:30 am walked to the front lounge and made some mate tea, then I opened the fridge and pulled out some left over Indian food from last night’s show. Super tasty, and extra spicy. I finished the rest of it and decided to walk around the city of Boise Idaho. Found a bunch of great local shops then decided to go watch archer on the bus for a couple hours. Now I’m waiting back stage for TBS to finish sound checking while I’m doing this interview. How about you?
AMBY: Which three songs are the quintessential The Used?
Quinn Allman: Revolution– Overdose– Box full of Sharp Objects
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Quinn Allman: Jeph- Kind, Dan- Loyal, Bert- Outspoken, Quinn- 711
AMBY: Which lyric by The Used is your personal favourite?
Quinn Allman: “Just like in the books, the voices spoke unto me”
“How do you expect to fight with buildings in the way?”
AMBY: Who have you been listening to lately?
Quinn Allman: Justice, Tame Impala, Little Dragon, Santigold
AMBY: What’s the most inappropriate thing you’ve ever said or done?
Quinn Allman: “Go fuck yourself, Mom”
AMBY: Over the course of being a band, you’ve gained an extremely loyal and ever-growing fanbase. What would you like to say to them?
Quinn Allman: Words really can’t say how much it means to have such loyal fans. You inspire us to keep going and believe in our work.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about The Used that nobody knows yet?
Quinn Allman: We don’t care what people think or say what’s cool or in style. We’ve watched bands come and go who think they’re the shit. We really don’t fucking care. We’re concerned more with our friendships and family than anything. We’re here to love.
Thank you The Used, for giving us your answers!
