When one thinks of Britain (oh, how terribly formal of me), one thinks of tea drinking, crumpet consuming, near-constant rain, Union Jack waving and Spice Girls. These are the things that make Britain so quintessentially…British. It’s time to add London-based quartet Flyte to the equation.
Arguably, the band’s debut single is a musical embodiment of Britishness. A titular obsession with the elements, reiterated in the opening lines “In your dad’s old car / Hiding from the weather“, combined with the old fashioned British spirit to battle through, ‘We Are The Rain‘ is a Talking Heads-inspired, summery indie-pop track guaranteed to put a smile on your face. With a sound not dissimilar to that of Theme Park and Mystery Jets, summer can’t come fast enough when tracks like this are being put out.
Throw in the video, a homage to British stereotypes (including Union Jack glasses, beer cans in paddling pools, depressing house parties and a shrine to Desert Island Discs host Kirsty Young) and I’m already excited to escape the “April showers” that are upon us. ‘We Are The Rain’ b/w ‘Where Nobody Knows Your Name’ is out April 28 on paradYse Records.
