On April 7th, Swedish/English/American group The Franklys dropped their debut single Puppet via Electric Woods Records. With its release, the London-based all girl quartet tease their fans for what’s to come along with showcase their loud and fiery rock and roll. Read our interview below as we discussed what they do for fun, being banned from places, and Mother Theresa…
AMBY: Thanks for speaking with us today. Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
The Franklys: Heya, We are Jen, lead vox & Swedish Viking, Fanny, lead guitar & shredder, Zoe, English Rose bad ass bass player, & Nicole (me) American no nonsense hard hitting drummer
AMBY: The band consists of members from Sweden, the U.S., and the UK. How did you all meet and form The Franklys?
The Franklys: Jen & Fanny are from the same town in Sweden & Zoe & I met them here in London, on a night out, through a mutual friend
AMBY: You just released your debut single Puppet . What’s the story behind the track?
The Franklys: Puppet just came together, nothing planned, it came about just jamming in rehearsal and we were like, ooo, that sounds good … & kept working on it. The same came about super quick, everything fell into place like a jiffy. The lyrics are pretty raw and honest and for that, we set the tone of the arrangement, melodic lead guitars to offset the thrash drums & bass pumping alongside Jen’s words and force behind it.
AMBY: What’s next as far as recordings or releases go? Is there an EP or album in the works?
The Franklys: We have been writing tunes lately, in between all the biz and playing live. We would love to release an album in 2015….things change & you may see us release two more singles in the interim while recording. Our plan is to keep writing & have the material ready to go so when the opportunity arises (hopefully soon) we are ready to go….it’s all coming together.
AMBY: Outside of music, what do you all do for fun?
The Franklys: Well .. mmm … when I have down time, I pretty much go out dancing (all over Europe to specific parties) in the MOD / psych scene, been doing it for 10 years … it’s an extension to drumming. Jen , she’s a crafty person who likes comedies, films & at the moment she’s studying too. Fanny, she LOVES to eat & drink. She can drink you under the table in pints, you should try it some time. Zoe, she loves walking the city from top to bottom, movies, reading, going to gigs and she’s studies too, Biology (cool, ha!) She’s the band doctor!
AMBY: What’s one of the most inappropriate things you’ve ever said or done?
The Franklys: Oh boy, do not remind me! I have had my fill of being banned from places (oops), punching, & saying some harsh things …. I do not like crowds or people I do not know touching me & I can get a bit psycho … I mean, you know When you waiting in line to cash out somewhere & the person behind you has their bag or a hanger in your back … Umm … I’ll pretty much rippem to shreds! I take no prisoners. I’m American, I can be very loud and generally say what others would love too but are too shy to do it …. I’ll do it!
AMBY: What was the first record you bought, and do you feel did album had an influence on your music?
The Franklys: I had asked this once before, I could not really remember .. but I do remember listening to the Velvet Underground & Tiny Tim back in college for the 1st time & thinking, wow, this is like nothing I have ever heard … It definitely changed the way I make music & I’d have to say Jimi Hendrix, I would ski to ‘All Along the Watchtower’, it would get me in the mood to hit moguls & go mad, what it soooo MUCH fun. I’m not skiing again as I don’t trust others on the slopes & I can’t take that risk .. BOO! Everything about the arrangements / all the instruments are just mind blowing and no one today can compare
AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?
The Franklys: I’m really looking forward to the release of our new video for Puppet. I spent my Christmas Entire writing it & it was a 100 page storyboard and to see it finished, it looks GREAT! Alongside the video, Strawberry Fields will be a great experience and I imagine there will be a lot of consumption of beer! Yahoooo! Summertime is upon us!
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about The Franklys did nobody knows yet?
The Franklys: Ummmmm …. ooooo …. I’m a man … NO! Haaaaaa (it’s an inside joke tape), uhhhhh …. I knew Allen Ginsburg personally and would visit him at his home and (your gunna think I’m lying BUT I’m NOT), I met Mother Theresa with my sister Audra and a very small TV crew back in Boston. Mother Theresa thing coming out of a home after visiting babies with HIV and there we were at the right place and the right time. I know, crazy, I touched her! Am I blessed?
Thank you The Franklys, for giving us your answers!
