John Ridgard and Beck Wood are Coves, a duo from Leamington Spa who just released their new record Soft Friday. To learn more about the LP and John and Beck, we caught up with Coves to discuss getting their hands dirty, influences, festivals, and hummus. Here’s what they had to say:
AMBY: Hello Coves, welcome back to AMBY! What’s the band been up to?
John: Thanks! We been getting our hands dirty.
Beck: Having fun on tour and eating at serves stations.
AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?
AMBY: You recently released your new album Soft Friday! Tell us a bit about your writing process — how do you start writing a song and who writes what?
John: If it was compared to baking then I would prepare the sponge, beck would drop me some jam around and i would put the cake together, beck will then come back around and make the icing and decorate it… We both then try the cake and decide if it should be given to others or smashed to bits outside the kitchen
AMBY: Who were your biggest influences when it came to songwriting on the album?
John: Dr. Menedez, Air Mail Chemist
Beck: Burger bits and red wine
AMBY: What is the significance behind the album’s title?
John: Fridays were experimentation’s in music and medicine for the later part of 2012.
Beck: Red wine on a Friday night would make a giant soft.
AMBY: You are allowed to say one sentence, which will reach the whole world. What would you say?
John: Do what you want.
Beck: Keep the change you filthy animal.
AMBY: If you could invite any three people to record an album with, who would you pick?
John: Beck, Andy and Tim (the band and sound engineer)
Beck: John, Andy and Tim
AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?
John: The festivals and getting stuck into album 2.
Beck: Same as John, so excited to get back in the studio and have a good summer with the festivals.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s the best part of being in Coves?
Thank you Coves, for giving us your answers!
