Releasing their new album Vanishing Act on February 25th (available here), Toronto/Los Angeles outfit Early Winters just finished their tour opening for Afghan Whigs. After the tour, we were given the opportunity of catching up with the band. Read the entire interview below as we discuss the new album, being scattered globally, and how they are from another planet.
AMBY: Hey Early Winters, welcome to AMBY. What’s the band been up to lately?
Early Winters: We just finished a tour of the west coast of the US opening for the Afghan Whigs. Lovely people, and extremely hospitable. We rocked the crowd gently each night.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Early Winters: Dan-Canada, Zac-Mescal, Carina-Polaroid, JR-Gorgeous
AMBY: You released your new album Vanishing Act in February. What was one of the best moments you had while creating the album?
Early Winters: Creating the songs. We were working on quite a tight schedule, yet we managed to pull it together and write as a team. We are still quite proud of the results.
AMBY: While writing songs for the record, the band was scattered globally. How did this impact the overall songwriting process?
Early Winters: It may have helped. Instead of drawing out the writing process, we got together and spilled all our varying ideas onto the floor, then pieced everything together like a puzzle. Being apart probably keeps the ideas fresh.
AMBY: Which songs off the record are your favourites?
Early Winters: We are partial to Millionaire and Up In Arms. These songs came together nicely, and perhaps best represent our sound.
AMBY: My personal favourite from the album is A Thing For You. What’s the story behind the song?
Early Winters: We wanted to write a song that was a syllabic assault, so we kept pouring the words in, like a stream of consciousness, where images and moments keep piling on top of each other. It’s more of a creepy painting than a song.
AMBY: Where would you go in a time machine?
Early Winters: Back to the old house.
AMBY: If you could tour with any band, who would you choose?
Early Winters: Kate Bush or Nick Cave.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Early Winters that nobody knows yet?
Early Winters: We are from the planet Zoiren and we are friendly.
Thank you Early Winters, for giving us your answers!
