Bradford’s Man Can’t Fly started their 2014 by releasing their Take Me Home EP. With a slew of upcoming intimate gigs and the release of their new single Vacant, we caught up with the acoustic-rock outfit to discuss all of the excitement. Have a read at the interview below as we discuss recording in a toilet, a song about love, intimate shows, and going back to the sixties.
AMBY: Hey Man Can’t Fly, thanks for speaking with us! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
Man Can’t Fly: Hey guys, we’re Man Can’t Fly – a 4-piece Acoustic-Rock/Pop band from Bradford. I guess we draw influences from bands such as Coldplay, Elbow and with our new single featuring a the lovely A Girl Called Ruth, the added female vocal adds a quirky ‘Of Monsters And Men’ Vs. ‘Magic Numbers’ feel.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Man Can’t Fly: Oli (Drums) – “Chilled”; Sam (Bass) – “Dopey”; James (Guitars/vocals) – “Smooth”; Ben (Vocals/Keys/guitar) – “Collected”.
AMBY: You kicked the year off releasing your Take Me Home EP. What was the best moment you had while recording it?
Man Can’t Fly: The best moment hmmm, the whole thing really but probably recording the guitars for Forest Fire was a highlight…who’d have thought the sound we were after would be found by recording in a toilet!
AMBY: Taken from the EP, what’s the story behind your song Forest Fire?
Man Can’t Fly: Forest Fire is about the common chaos of, dare I say it, “Love”. You want it, but when you have it you want something what you believe to be better. When you’ve had it and lost it, it mimics the pain of what you’d imagine being set on fire feels like. When you’ve had it and lost it, you want it again but you’re too afraid to take the leap, so you just keep running away. Finally, when you’ve finally realized that you’ve fallen in love, the other person has gone because you never acted on it. Lovely isn’t it, ‘love’.
AMBY: What inspired your upcoming intimate “Le Tour de Doorstep” tour?
Man Can’t Fly: “Le Tour De Doorstep” was inspired by ‘Pledge Music’. Many bands are getting out there in this way – meeting fans, playing intimate shows and earning money towards their next band-venture. We just thought we’d do the same but do it our own way with our own tag rather than being branched on the same tree.
AMBY: If you could tour with any band, who would you choose?
Man Can’t Fly: Tough one. We’d all no doubt say something different. To keep things grounded, Scars On 45 or The Dunwells. Aiming for the stars – Death Cab For Cutie or Counting Crows. But if you’re Coldplay reading this, give us a call!
AMBY: What do you do for fun when you aren’t making music?
Man Can’t Fly: We’re all different. I guess we all like a beer (or 10) and watching other live music, Oli and Ben are snowsport extremists, Sam is a family guy and James is a skilled Upholster!
AMBY: Where would you go in a time machine?
Man Can’t Fly: Back to the 60’s when music was really taking shape … plus, was it really as crazily ‘sex, drugs and rock and roll’ as they made out? I want to know.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Man Can’t Fly that nobody knows yet?
Man Can’t Fly: That our best is yet to come….true, but lame. Alton Towers is responsible for our band name – fact!
Thank you Man Can’t Fly, for giving us your answers!
