Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Grand Cousin

Grand Cousin
New York indie-alternative trio Grand Cousin are currently readying themselves for the release of their debut self-titled EP, set for release on July 8th. Led by lead singer Henry Hall (son of Julia Louis Dreyfus), this group combines crisp and fresh melodies with ethereal vocals to deliver dance-evoking tracks. Read our new interview with the band below, as we discuss hypothetical stories, super scary ghosts, and a jui-jitsu troupe.

AMBY: Hello Grand Cousin, what’s the band been up to lately?

Grand Cousin: Hello! We are currently gearing up for the release of our new EP.  We’ve also been playing lots of shows in New York City and at Wesleyan University (where we all go to school, and will hopefully graduate from in May), so come check us out!  Lastly, we are currently writing a full dictionary for a made-up language that we’re creating.  It’s coming along nicely.

AMBY: How would you describe each member of Grand Cousin in one word?

Grand Cousin: Evan is air, Robby is fire, and Henry is water.

AMBY: You’re set to release your debut EP this spring. Looking forward to the EP; what can fans expect to hear from the forthcoming release?

Grand Cousin: Anxious lyrics, deep grooves, tasty melodies.

AMBY: What’s the story behind your single “Camera”?

Grand Cousin: “Camera” is a hypothetical story about Henry putting a camera in his girlfriend’s room. Hypothetical.

AMBY: Tell me a bit about your writing process — how do you start writing a song and who writes what?

Grand Cousin: Henry is our songwriter. There’s no set process of songwriting, really, but he’s always searching for that feeling that you get when you hear a song that you really love, that intangible, music-y feeling that we all love and know when we feel it. If that feeling pops up out of a chord progression or a melody line that Henry thinks up, then his lyrics find a way to fit themselves into that melody, and before you know it, it’s a fully-formed song. Then, all three of us arrange the song to fit into it the Grand Cousin rock-trio sound. The final step is for Robby to throw in his country-blues rap/scat verse on every single song, so hopefully we’ll be back in the studio to do that really soon.

AMBY: If you could tour with any band, who would you choose?

Grand Cousin: It’s hard to pick one, but…. Radiohead? How could we not pick Radiohead?!

AMBY: You are allowed to say one sentence, which will reach the whole world. What would you say?

Grand Cousin: Everybody watch out for ghosts. Those things are super scary and if you ever see one, just keep walking and don’t engage.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Grand Cousin that nobody knows yet?

Grand Cousin: At our first show in 2010, we opened for a jui-jitsu troupe.

Thank you Grand Cousin, for giving us your answers!
