Comprised of singer and guitarist John Engelbert and drummer and percussionist Oskar “Ossi” Bonde, Johnossi are a rock-pop duo from Stockholm, Sweden. In a recent interview, we caught up with the band’s John Englebert to discuss their latest release Transitions, other artists from Sweden, the inspiration of a psychic. Here’s what he had to say:
AMBY: Hey Johnossi, thanks for speaking with us today. What’s the band been up to lately?
Johnossi: Ossi’s been ill for a couple of months (his body and mind just gave up, too much women and wine) but now he’s back on the horse hungrier than ever so we’ve been rehearsing for some upcoming shows in Sweden next weekend, feels great! We’ve also been doing interviews and other stuff since we’re releasing our latest record “Transitions” in US very soon.
AMBY: How would you describe each other in one word?
Johnossi: Since it’s only me here (John) I can only describe Ossi and then I would say he’s a very calm person.
AMBY: Releasing your latest album Transitions in 2013, what are your thoughts on the record now that there’s been time to reflect on it?
Johnossi: I don’t really like to reflect upon or think too much about stuff I’ve already done and created, I just wanna move forward all the time but I know that I’m proud of these song we did and I feel that we once again succeeded with putting our feelings/fears/secrets/fantasies on tape for the world to enjoy.
AMBY: Which songs off the album are still your personal favourites?
Johnossi: Alone Now, Gone Forever, Into the Wild, For a Little While.
AMBY: When it came to recording Transitions, what were your biggest influences?
AMBY: What’s next for the band as far as recordings or releases go?
Johnossi: We’re always working on new stuff and hopefully we’re gonna record some new shit after the summer. We’re eager to move on.
AMBY: Which other bands or artists from Sweden should our readers check out?
Johnossi: At the moment “Elliphant” and “Tove Lo” is what I listen to the most. A great song is “Scarred for Life” by “Sabina Ddumba.” Mando Diaos song “Sweet Wet Dreams” is amazing. Also Lykke Li is releasing a new record, haven’t heard it yet though, but she’s usually great. One of the best records ever that nobody knows about outside of Sweden is Silverbullit “Archlight” from 2004.
AMBY: Who would you like to be most and least stuck in an elevator with?
Johnossi: Most= Michael Jackson (RIP, my hero forever). Second most= Pamela Anderson (Baywatch era). Least: Charles Manson
AMBY: Lastly, tell us something about Johnossi that nobody knows yet.
Johnossi: We mainly do this because I went to a psychic when I was 19 and she told me I would be successful if I started this band with my dear friend Ossi.
Thank you Johnossi, for giving us your answers!
