“Rat Boy” is the musical moniker for 18 year old one man band Jordan Cardy, from Chelmsford in Essex. Frustrated at efforts to coral bandmates together into a viable group he took matters into his own hands as a solo artist. “Sportswear” is one track off his first 5 track “Mixtape” with an official debut EP still to follow.
Going solo is looking like a sound choice. Without having to compromise Jordan is able to deliver his distinctly British style of hip hop commenting on life’s everyday occurrences over a mash up of indie guitars and electronic beats. There’s more than a hint of the influences of Jamie T and The Streets to his sound but Rat Boy delivers a fresh take on a genre that’s always got space for new talent. That said he’s clearly looked back into its precursors citing the likes of The Clash and Big Audio Dynamite as amongst the inspirations for his sound.
There’s naturally an edginess to the lyrics with some language perhaps deterring daytime radio play (at least uncensored). But it’s no more than a reflection of what’s heard around and it’s a fitting antidote to some of the treacly pop we have to endure if we can’t switch the dial. A bright start.
