With two upcoming shows for NXNE — Friday the 20 at The Mod Club (9:00 pm) and Saturday the 21st (at 6:30pm) and Y-D Square with Spoon and Mac Demarco — and a debut album out on July 22nd, there couldn’t have been a better time to chat with Toronto fuzz-pop group Alvvays. Dive into our new interview below as we discuss the inspiration of bleak Canadian winters, Freaks and Geeks, observational lyrics, and more.
AMBY: Hello Alvvays, cheers for speaking with AMBY today! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
Alvvays: Alec O’Hanley, Molly Rankin, Brian Murphy, Kerri MacLellan and Phil MacIsaac.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Alvvays: NEXT.
AMBY: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration for your sun-soaked fuzz-pop?
Alvvays: Bleak Canadian winter months. Freezing snot. Molly was working in a smoothie hut on Spadina when we wrote most of the songs.
AMBY: Your upcoming debut album was recorded with Chad VanGaalen at Yoko Eno studio and will be released in July What can fans expect to hear from the record?
Alvvays: Chiming guitars, pop melodies, tape hiss, observational lyrics.
AMBY: Does hailing from Toronto have an influence on your sound? If so, how?
Alvvays: We are maritime kids who moved up in a cube van. We have some underlying celtic themes that sometimes reflect where we grew up but we also listen to a lot of 80’s stuff from overseas, so there’s that too.
AMBY: If you could choose to have your music featured in any movie or show, which would you choose?
Alvvays: Freaks and Geeks would’ve been cool but we probably don’t use enough flangers to be included on that soundtrack. And we’re fifteen years too late.
AMBY: Where would your dream concert take place and who would be in the line-up?
Alvvays: Somewhere on the west coast of Cape Breton. Dolly Mixture, Kirsty MacColl, maybe a Smiths Reunion?
AMBY: And lastly, what’s something about Alvvays that nobody knows yet?
Alvvays: We are staunch conservatives. Just kidding.
