Comprised of Tom Mackay, Peter Barnes, Joe Gallo, and James Connolly, Brothers of North are an indie-rock band from Newmarket/Aurora, Ontario. Formed in 2012, today marks Brothers of North’s second anniversary as group and they will play a special Birthday Bash gig at The Horseshoe Tavern (tickets) to celebrate! Ahead of the show, we caught up with vocalist and guitarist James to discuss their EP Stolen Cars, an upcoming full length album, Lynyrd Skynyrd concerts, and pure coincidences — enjoy!
AMBY: Hello Brothers Of North, welcome to AMBY! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
Brothers Of North: Hey everyone! I’m James the rhythm guitar player and vocalist. I’m Joe the lead guitarist. I’m Petey the bassist. And I’m Tom the drummer.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Brothers Of North: James- driven, Joe- creative, Tom- LOUD, Petey- Knowledgable
AMBY: You released your debut EP Stolen Cars in August of last year. What influences can be found on the new EP that might not be apparent to a listener?
Brothers Of North: We’re all big fans of Led Zeppelin and all of that awesome classic rock which doesn’t really show in our EP. There might be slight hints of it, but its pretty hard to hear. We have a song called useless pages we think has a bit of a folk feel to it, not sure if that’s an obvious one or not.
AMBY: Taken from the EP, what’s the story behind your song 1990’s?
Brothers Of North: When we wrote 1990’s, we started with the instrumental and added vocals after. James thought it had a bit of a 90’s feel to it, so naturally the first words out of his mouth were “its that 1990’s feel you know and love.” The song built around that. Obviously it’s about a girl too, most of our girlfriends were born in the 90’s
AMBY: What’s next as far as recordings or releases go?
Brothers Of North: We’re currently writing like mad men and have enough material for a full length album but we’re taking our time and making sure the album is perfect and totally ready before we record anything. The new record has songs that would fit in with stolen cars, and others that are more “rocky” which we’re having tons of fun with. We should have it out by next spring.
AMBY: Where would your dream concert take place and who would be in the line-up?
Joe: The dream for me is to play a main stage at any festival.. Bonnaroo, Osheaga, Lollapolooza, edgefest, doesn’t matter which one. We’ve always dreamt of playing outdoors in front of a sea of people. Line up would be hard…BON the Weeks, Arkells, Kings of Leon, Led Zeppelin circa 1975 (is that against the rules?)
AMBY: If you could be a fly on the wall at any given time or event, where would you want to be?
Brothers Of North: Any Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. It would have been so unreal!!! Freebird……
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Brothers Of North that nobody knows yet?
Brothers Of North: James, Joe, and Petey first jammed together in 2004. James and Joe kind of lost touch with Petey. James and Joe got together with Tom in 2012 and the three of us met back up with Petey in 2013 to form BON. Crazy story. Pure coincidence.
Thank you Brothers of North, for giving us your answers!
