Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Lottery Winners

The Lottery Winners
Thomas Rylance, Robert Lally, Joe Singleton, and Katie Lloyd are The Lottery Winners — a Lancashire foursome bringing music lovers their upbeat brand of indie-pop with a romantic twist. To learn more about the group, we recently caught up with The Lottery Winners and discussed music from the eighties, love songs, and where they’d go in a time machine — enjoy!

AMBY: Hello The Lottery Winners, cheers for speaking with us today. What’s the band been up to lately?

The Lottery Winners: Lots and lots! We’ve been doing all of the things that bands usually do. We’ve been making music, and arguing, and posing in front of graffiti on black and white photographs. We’ve also been making a record with a man called Steve Levine, which is exciting.

AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?

The Lottery Winners: Thom – Frivolous, Rob – Chucklesome, Katie – Virtuosic, Joe – Football.

AMBY: You recently released your new single Heavy Heart — I’ve become obsessed with the song! When it came to creating it, who were your influences, musically?

The Lottery Winners: We really quite like music from the eighties; Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, the Smiths, the Cure, Psychedelic Furs, Talking Heads and the like, so I suppose it would be difficult to ignore the influence of those. We recorded it with Steve, and he has a plethora of original eighties machines that make nice noises. So I think it sounds quite authentic to that era.

AMBY: What’s the story behind the song?

The Lottery Winners: It’s a typical song of lost love, I suppose. I think it’s important to address the things that people relate to and know. Using different words than other people to do it is the challenge.

AMBY: Is there an EP or record in the works?

The Lottery Winners: Yep. We’re in the studio right now, so hopefully we’ll have new music for all to hear soon.

AMBY: What do you do for fun when you aren’t making music?

The Lottery Winners: We’re a gang; we spend all of time together, listening to records, watching films, and going to football matches. And drinking.

AMBY: Where would you go in a time machine?

The Lottery Winners: I’d go back to infant me, and tell him to stop eating.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about The Lottery Winners that nobody knows yet?

The Lottery Winners: I plan to leave the band and go solo, like Robbie Williams, it’s only a matter of time.
