Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ The Savage Nomads

The Savage Nomads
On March 19th we reviewed Porno, a new groovy single from South London trio The Savage Nomads. Comprised of Cole Salewicz (guitar and vocals), Josh Miles (guitar and vocals), and Benjy Miles (guitar, synth, percussion), the band are readying themselves to release a new track this summer. To learn more, read our new interview below as we discussed listening to T Rex, funky basslines, and band names.

AMBY: Hey The Savage Nomads, welcome to AMBY! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.

The Savage Nomads: Hello A Music Blog, Yea?! A pleasure to be here, I’m Cole and I sing, play the guitar and the synth and reading these questions with me is Josh who plays the guitar…and synth…and sings. He’s also a whizzkid on Logic Pro. Josh and I have been jamming tunes together for a long time.

AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?

The Savage Nomads: I’d say Josh: ASTEROID. Josh says of me: VERTIGO. And we both say of Benjy: MACHAVELLI.

AMBY: Where did the name The Savage Nomads come from, and what other names had you considered for the band?

The Savage Nomads: I hadn’t considered any other names – my first band was called Johnny & The Nazis – I really wanted to stick with that up to a certain point, you know sing harmonised folk about the miscreants who live in London Underground after dark but our management when we were 17 steered us away from that. Be careful who you take guidance from, that’s what I say. Josh agrees. When you’re vulnerable and wide eyed any moustached man with a wine membership can lead you astray. I saw a documentary called 80 Blocks from Tiffany’s – Savage Nomads were in that, the all inclusive but predominantly Puerto Rican Savage Nomads who fought for equality in the Bronx throughout the 70s.

AMBY: What’s the story behind your catchy single Porno?

The Savage Nomads: Well the world is a very fast place isn’t it? It’s not a love song, put it that way. I wrote that on 21st December 2012 – when the world was supposed to end. I was thinking about that, about the infinite amount of things happening in the world at that moment, getting really pretentiously existential and then Josh laid down that funky bassline…the rest is indie pop history.

AMBY: Is there an EP or record in the works?

The Savage Nomads: Yes we are writing all the time, in fact this week has been a bit frustrating because we’ve been working on our next music video and as such there’s not much been much time to write which really drives me up the wall: I don’t sleep properly if we’re not in the middle of a song.  I used to get writers block but now I just want to get it all out, all the time, there’s not enough hours in the day. There are dozens of new songs. An LP will happen, certainly…

AMBY: With everyone’s favourite season right around the corner, what’s your favourite part about playing festivals and summer shows?

The Savage Nomads: The free salad and wheatgrass and listening to T Rex on the way there.

AMBY: What are the top five things to do on your bucket list?

The Savage Nomads: 1. Steal an Easter Island Head

2. Write the great American novel

3. Sleep one night with the fishes

4. Cameo in a Simpsons episode

5. Build an entire house out of memory foam.

AMBY: Where would you go in a time machine?

The Savage Nomads: Here.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about The Savage Nomads that nobody knows yet?

The Savage Nomads: If there was still going to be sex and drugs, we’d probably be alright without the rock and roll.
