Fusing electronicia, shoegaze, and new wave with some good ‘ol rock and roll, Parade of Lights (Ryan Daly, Anthony Improgo, Michelle Ashley, and Randy Schulte) have created a uniquely perfect sound to call their own. After the release of their latest EP Golden, we caught up with the foursome to discuss influences, EP titles, dream festivals in Ireland, and pop divas. Enjoy!
AMBY: Hello Parade of Lights, welcome to AMBY! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
Parade of Lights: My name is Ryan Daly and I sing/play guitar in Parade of Lights. The other members are Anthony Improgo (drums/vox), Randy Schulte (bass/vox), and Michelle Ashley (keys/vox).
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Parade of Lights: Ryan: Worried, Anthony: Focused, Michelle: Hungry, Randy: Metallica
AMBY: Who influences your electro-shoegaze rock?
Parade of Lights: My Bloody Valentine, Failure, Depeche Mode?
AMBY: Congrats on the release of your Golden EP. What was the experience like recording it?
Parade of Lights: It was good. Stressful, but good. We wrote, recorded, and produced this EP ourselves, so it was a big task to take on, but it was worth it in the end. We have a small studio in North Hollywood, CA, so we were holed up there for a couple months knocking it out. We recorded drums and a couple live instruments with our friends at Vegas View Recording/IADT in Las Vegas, NV. I think bouncing back and forth between Vegas and LA had a positive effect on the process, because it gave us the chance to switch things up on ourselves. It’s always good to get out of your element if you feel boxed in.
AMBY: What’s the significance behind the EP’s title, Golden?
Parade of Lights: There is a song on the EP called Golden, which is a song that we feel best sums up who we are and what we’re about. It was the first song that we finished for the EP, and it’s the one that set the tone for the rest of the record. It seemed fitting to use it as the title.
AMBY: Does living in Los Angeles have an influence on your music? If so, how?
Parade of Lights: Absolutely. Living on the coast has had a big influence on the way we sound; especially songs like “The Island”. I’m a firm believer of your surroundings defining how you operate, so while I can’t exactly pinpoint what growing up on the coast has done for the music I’m sure it would sound different if we were based on the East Coast, or somewhere toward the Midwest.?
AMBY: Where would your dream concert take place and who would be in the line-up?
Parade of Lights: Probably in a massive field in Ireland at dusk. U2 would be there?
AMBY: If you could trade places with another artist in the music industry for one day, who would it be?
Parade of Lights: Someone ridiculous – like Cher or a pop diva.
AMBY: What has you most excited for the rest of 2014?
Parade of Lights: Touring and sharing our music with the world.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Parade of Lights that nobody knows yet?
Parade of Lights: We listen to a lot of metal in the van while we’re on tour.
Thank you Parade of Lights, for giving us your answers!
