Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Lola Colt

Lola Colt
London six-piece Lola Colt are creating contagious psychedelia we want our readers to sink their teeth into. With the recent announcement of details for their debut album Away From The Water (out October 27th via Fuzz Club Records) and a full UK tour this October, we caught up with the band’s Gun to learn more. Enjoy!

AMBY: Hey Lola Colt, welcome to our site. What’s the band been up to lately?

Lola Colt: Hello there. Well we just threw a summer party at our local the Shacklewell Arms with our friends Moksha Medicine (check them out!) Right now we’re planning the release of our debut album, an accompanying tour in the UK and festival dates around Europe, creating artwork and movie briefs and sucking up the London heatwave.

AMBY: You recently released your third single Vacant Hearts. What’s the story behind the song?

Lola Colt: It wears its heart very much on its sleeve. It’s about being a vacant heart and being haunted by your ex-lover’s tongue.

AMBY: Along with the single, you recorded your forthcoming debut album with Jim Sclavunos. Is there a working title and release date for the record yet?

Lola Colt: It’s coming out around the end of October – we’re announcing the exact date with a big old launch party pretty soon, if we haven’t already done that by the time this interview is out! The title remains a secret for now.

AMBY: What was one of the best moments you had while recording the upcoming album?

Lola Colt: I think the most fun we had was just generally experimenting and creating unusual sounds, getting the time to really indulge ideas. Things like on one track we used a pair of drum brushes on a guitar; gently brushing strings behind the bridge makes these zingy awesome atmospheric sounds. Also getting to try new things with the drums, like breaking away from the traditional ‘drum kit’ in search of something more tribal by separating out the drum parts and playing them with more people.

AMBY: The band is known for your captivating live performances. What’s one of the craziest things to happen to you while performing?

Lola Colt: I remember one show where we were in full swing, belting out a chorus and I see James, one of our guitarists go flying across in front of me through the audience and out of a side door. It was like… man get back here! We’re in the middle of a song! Turns out he’d just broken a string and his spares were out the back, but at the time it really blew my concentration right out.

AMBY: Describe your dream gig and who would be on the bill with you.

Lola Colt: Dream gig? Wow, here goes… we go back in time, pick up Grace Slick, Lou Reed, Link Wray, maybe Jim Morrison if there’s room then shoot forward a thousand years or so, pick up whatever mad new instruments they’ve invented by then and book a show at the biggest astro space venue they have out in orbit.

AMBY: If you could be a fly on the wall at any given time or event, where would you want to be?

Lola Colt: I’d like to have sat buzzing for a decade in Muscle Shoals.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Lola Colt that nobody knows yet?

Lola Colt: We record and rehearse in a disused Turkish delight factory.

Thank you Lola Colt, for giving us your answers!
