Between releasing their new single You to Believe In, signing with a label, and embarking on their debut nationwide headlining tour, calling 2014 “busy” for Paradise Fears would be quite an understatement. Before they had hit the road, A Music Blog, Yea? spoke with the South Dakota five-piece’s Sam Miller to discuss museum kicks, touring with forty chargers, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, and wanting to get a tour dog — enjoy!
AMBY: Hey Paradise Fears, welcome to our site. What’s the band been up to lately?
Paradise Fears: Hello, hello. Glad to be here. We’ve been doing a lot. Releasing new music, signing with a label, getting ready to head out on our first big US headlining tour. And then relaxing, sleeping, eating.. a lot.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of Paradise Fears in one word?
Paradise Fears: I would describe myself as the-kind-of-guy-you-would-want-as-a-best-man-at-your-wedding (it’s one word, I swear), Cole is collected, Michael is clear-eyed, Jordan is ambitious, Marcus is comfortable.
AMBY: Who inspires your feel-good anthemic music?
Paradise Fears: A lot of different artists. Musically, we love pulling from things that Coldplay does, The Script, Jack’s Mannequin, loads of different new alternative bands are doing cool things & so we’re trying to stay very aware of that movement. Lyrically, it’s everything from Conor Oberst to Drake to some spoken word poets like Anis Mojgani.
AMBY: You recently unveiled a new single titled You To Believe In. What’s the story behind the song?
Paradise Fears: There was a point in time where I was very discouraged by the state of affairs in the world on a pragmatic level (I still am, in some ways), feeling despondent & hopeless about a generation I was watching make terrible decisions with incredible privilege, but I could never get too frustrated by it, because there were people in my life who gave me hope that we could learn to care about each other more than we care about Kim Kardashian’s stupid fucking video game.
AMBY: The band will soon embark on your first ever full nationwide headlining tour, congrats! When you have that extra time to wander around cities, would you say you’re all sightseers, food lovers, or what do you enjoy doing while in another city?
Paradise Fears: Thank you! Definitely love food, & when we’re able, we’ll do some sight-seeing as well. I was on a museum kick for a while, I love finding large bodies of water or parks, this tour I’m hoping to go to some slam poetry events while in other cities.
AMBY: What are some quintessential touring items you always have with you?
Paradise Fears: I have to bring like 40 chargers because they never stick around for more than a few days.
AMBY: If you could be a fly on the wall at any given time or event, where would you want to be?
Paradise Fears: I would want to watch John Lennon track “Imagine”. Or listen to The Wachowskis & David Mitchell adapt “Cloud Atlas” into a screenplay.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Paradise Fears that nobody knows yet?
Paradise Fears: That we have, on 4 different occasions, seriously considered getting a dog for tour & naming it “Gig, the tour dog.”
Thank you Paradise Fears, for giving us your answers!
