Gimme Your Answers: An Interview w/ Wrabel

New York singer-songwriter Stephen Wrabel (known by his moniker Wrabel) released his latest pop EP Sideways on June 24th. A few months after its release, A Music Blog, Yea? were given the opportunity of speaking with Wrabel to discuss the #SidewaysSelfie, music he loves, covering songs, and a hatred of sandals. Dive into the exclusive interview below, and download Sideways here.

AMBY: Hello Wrabel, thanks for speaking with us today. What have you been up to lately?

Wrabel: hellooo. hmm. where to start. i’ve been writing. been playing a bit…traveling right now actually. headed to new york for some fashion week stuff and then out to london to write a bit.

AMBY: You recently released your new Sideways EP. What was one of the highlights you had while creating it?

Wrabel: working with dan black was pretty surreal. he’s one of my favorite artists. we did “into the wild” together with my friend drew pearson. i had the chance to go out to paris and work with dan at the end of last year. every time i work with him i kind of can’t believe it.

AMBY: When it comes to the release’s title, what’s the significance behind calling it Sideways?

Wrabel: “sideways” is the title track. i wrote it with two amazing talents — jim eliot and dan mcdougall in london and recorded it with jim out in wales. i mean even just that is special enough. “sideways” is a song about a relationship. about when you enter that weird, pretty awful standstill. it’s not good. it’s not awful. you’re just existing. i think it’s the saddest time, really. worse than just breaking up and trying to move on. you’re just kind of stuck. whether from pride or fear. you’re stuck. and it sucks.

AMBY: To honor the EP, you’re getting fans to upload their own #SidewaysSelfie. Show us your best #SidewaysSelfie!

Wrabel: haaha. can i get back to you on that one? how’s about i’ll tweet it to you? (sitting on a flight right now and trying to spare myself just a bit of embarrassment.)

AMBY: You recently shared your “MusicMonday – Little Bitta Everything” playlist. Who else have you been listening to lately?

Wrabel: hmm. my constants are paul simon, kate bush, dan black, aqualung, coldplay…a few more. i’ve been into banks for a bit. love that “brain” tune. also into jessie ware “tough love” at the moment. i’m always late on these things. i’m also not good with memory. those are the only two popping into my head.

AMBY: Your cover of XO by Beyoncé was great. Can we expect any other covers soon? Which other songs would you like to put your spin on?

Wrabel: thank you! really appreciate that. that was a fun little project. hmm. not sure. my buddy drew and i did it for fun one day. i don’t know really. maybe a paul simon song? although that scares me.

AMBY: If you could be a fly on the wall at any given time or event, where would you want to be?

Wrabel: wow. hmm i think i might want to be a fly on chris martin’s piano when he wrote…oh i don’t know…anything? i’d love to see the process of something like “fix you”. was it easy? was it hard? did he know what he was creating? that or *insert something funny here*

AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Wrabel that nobody knows yet?

Wrabel: wrabel hates sandals. of all kind.

Thank you Wrabel, for giving us your answers!
