On the same night as catching George Ezra at The Ritz, I managed to see John Newman’s support act Laura Doggett at the Manchester Apollo. Laura’s set up was perfect for her voice to get across the delicacy of her writing with a cello, keys, and a mixture of percussion — her talent really did shine through. It seems very stereotypical to pick two random female singers who aren’t mainstream and compare Laura to them put together, so I won’t… (Haim and Florence). However, if I was to make a comparison, it would hardly be an insult with Laura’s voice showing huge range from very quiet and passionate to a very strong and almost operatic tone. She managed to silence a room eagerly anticipating the set of John Newman. The stand-out track for me was definitely ‘Part Time Friends’ which showed great lyricism and performance. Watch out for Laura as she will surely continue to stride forward within the industry with performances like this.
