Stockholm trio Like Swimming (comprised of Ida Hedene, Claes Carlström, and Petter Wesslander) released their debut indie-pop record Structures in September. In our recent interview, we had the opportunity of catching up with Claes of the band to discuss falling in love with Vampire Weekend, living a double life, and eating at iHop. Enjoy!
AMBY: Hello Like Swimming, welcome to our site! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
Like Swimming: Hi! We’re three humble Swedes that have found the thrill of making music together inexhaustibly powerful. We’ve played together for 9 years, started this three piece acoustic/electronic venture about 2 years ago, and will probably keep on playing forever.
AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?
Like Swimming: Ida is the love, Petter is the building, Claes is the spur of the moment.
AMBY: You released your debut album Structures in September. What was one of the highlights you had while recording it?
Like Swimming: That moment when the nerves for being in such an amazing studio finally vanished and we just lost ourselves together in what we played. I think it happened in the middle of recording A Room Of Her Own, it’s a real pop tune.
AMBY: What inspired calling the album Structures?
Like Swimming: All our songs are trying to nail down the patterns and frames that we as individuals are limited and controlled by. In building a civilization we have also built a set of rules that not always are liberating. Instead they make us prosper on the ruins of others, instead they make men’s violence against women a commodity, and instead they give us heart attacks and depression. That’s the consequence of the structures we live in. So we’re constantly trying to shed light on these structures around us and remind ourselves about their existence. Hence the name, it’s a reminder.
AMBY: Taken from the record, I’m really enjoying the upbeat dance groove that Icarus has. When it came to creating it, who were your influences, musically?
Like Swimming: I think it all started with falling in love with Giving up the Gun by Vampire Weekend, I guess that’s where the drums from the first verse stems from. From there I think it started to live by itself and who knows where everything came from, there’s a lot of music in our heads constantly tumbling around.
AMBY: Which other artists from Sweden should we keep our eyes on?
Like Swimming: Hyper Heart are the greatest bombastic explosion right now, and you guys never seem to talk about Jenny Wilson. She’s a goddess! Mapei and Kim Cesarion are great too.
AMBY: If you could live a double life, describe it in a few sentences.
Like Swimming: I would be a ghost whisperer, kinda like a ghost writer for politicians but I would go around and whisper great social reforms and ideas into politicians ears so that they do good deeds take care of people.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about Like Swimming that nobody knows yet?
Like Swimming: That we LOVE eating at iHop!
Thank you Like Swimming, for giving us your answers!
