Gimme Your Answers 2: An Interview w/ Young Kato

With the very recent announcement of a debut album titled Don’t Wait ’Til Tomorrow (out April 5th), it was the perfect time to catch up with English six-piece Young Kato. Read our new interview with bassist Joe Lever below, as we discuss anthemic vibes, sweet dance moves, and their fans!

AMBY: Hey Young Kato, welcome back to our site! What’s the band been up to lately?

Young Kato: Hi! Nice to speak to you again. Basically just some festivals over the summer, writing more as always and getting stuff ready for releasing our new EP. We’re off back into the studio again soon to get the last bits of our album finished and then going on tour again.

AMBY: How would you describe each member of the band in one word?

Young Kato: Tom – Legend, Joe Green – Legend, Sam – Legend, Harry – Legend, Jack – Legend

AMBY: Taken from your new EP, your single Sunshine is infectious. Who were your biggest influences when it came to creating the track?

Young Kato: Thanks! Don’t really know – it’s very difficult to say to be honest. We listen to all sorts of music like literally everything really. We’re just constantly listening to different music new and old. We love pop music but I doubt that’s a surprise to many people if you listen to our music. I guess that track we were just influenced by having fun, enjoying ourselves. We weren’t really thinking ‘we want to write a song like this’ ,  ‘a song that sounds influenced by this’ or whatever. It was really sunny when the song was written but I guess thats probably quite obvious. We’re really pleased with the song though, we all really like it.. it’s got a kind of real happy youthful, anthemic vibe which we really like. We feel we’ve really found our sound as a band which is a good place to be… it takes a bit of time like we’ve been going for over 2 years now but I think it’s important to have time to learn and grow, go through a bit of trial and error, learn from your mistakes and work out the kind of band you are.

AMBY: There are some sweet moves displayed in the new video for the single. What’s your favourite dance move to use when listening to music?

Young Kato: I actually have my own signature dance move which I call the ‘octopus’ which is basically a thing where you kind of move your arms in a similar motion to how an octopus might move. I’m not sure if that makes too much sense without people actually seeing it but we’ll go with that. I’d like to incorporate it into a music video or our live set one day…

AMBY: You played a nice slew of festivals over the summer. What’s been your festival season highlight?

Young Kato: They’ve all been great! Dot To Dot was probably my favourite, that was a few months back now but we were really nicely surprised with how many people came to see us and stuff so was really cool, it’s like a travelling festival as well so you get to play 3 times which is always good… the more the better. Either that or a festival we played at Hyde Park in London.

AMBY: Where would your dream festival take place and who would be in the line-up?

Young Kato: Oooohh this is too difficult. Would be somewhere really nice and hot… on the beach somewhere. Maybe just have us play and blow the rest of the budget set out for booking the bands on cocktails.

AMBY: What’s the best item a fan has asked you to sign?

Young Kato: Haha I don’t know, various human body parts? We’ll stop there.

AMBY: Lastly, what’s the best part of being in Young Kato?

Young Kato: I know everyone probably says this but it’s just a great laugh being in a band with your mates playing music you love and going to places you probably wouldn’t have been to if it wasn’t for being in the band. We love it!

Thank you Young Kato, for giving us your answers!
